[MUST HAVE COFFEE EXPERIENCE]
Summit Coffee is a quickly growing national coffee and lifestyle brand, and our baristas are the front line of everyday interactions. As a barista, your main objective is to carry out Summit’s culture, pushing forward our mission and exhibiting our core values in engagement with fellow staff, customers, community, and the brand in general. To accomplish this, you’ll provide outstanding hospitality, serve high quality products, and work as part of a team.
Core Expectations:
Be Hospitable
- Greet every customer that comes into our store with eye contact, a friendly smile and a warm greeting.
- When operating the register, be attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. Give each guest your full attention, but also work efficiently and keep in mind the other customers waiting to be served.
- Actively search for ways in which you can give customers a great experience during their entire visit: open the door for someone with their hands full, patiently guide a new or confused customer through our menu to find an option they'll be happy with, look for customers who may not be completely satisfied and make an earnest effort to have that customer feel heard and cared for.
- Be aware of your surroundings and take care of the physical space beyond the bar. Every Summit café has spaces beyond the small area behind the bar that impact the customer experience. This includes bathrooms, outdoor spaces, any seating areas or nooks people interact with.
- Create an environment that you feel proud of and feels welcoming to all - this includes everything from making sure the music is at a reasonable volume and is PG, your conversations with other baristas are kind and friendly (customers can hear!), and the temperature isn’t too hot or too cold.
- Every interaction is an opportunity to share the Summit story, gain a new customer, and offer a remarkable experience. As a Barista, you are the face of Summit Coffee, and your job is to seize this opportunity.
- Serve high quality products and advance your knowledge of those products.
- When applicable, bring someone’s drink to them, or take an empty glass away for a customer, and provide service at the table in designated moments.
- Prepare and serve coffee beverages, blended and non-coffee beverages, beer and wine, baked goods, and other made-to-order food items with a deep care for quality, presentation, and customer experience.
- Be knowledgeable about our beer and wine offerings. You must be able to answer routine questions about any of the alcoholic offerings we serve.
- Summit's menu, especially its food and seasonal drink offerings, change frequently. You are expected to stay up-to-date with menu changes, and prepare new drinks with the same care and attention as familiar ones.
- Participate in ongoing development and team culture.
- Do not use your phone or eat food behind the bar - use your breaks to check your phone and eat, or step aside and communicate with your team to make sure they know you need
Be a good teammate
- Communicate extensively with your teammates to deliver on all aspects of the customer experience. This includes: ensuring smooth transitions and follow-through of customer orders or requests, notifying teammates when you leave the bar area to take a break or perform off-bar duties, communicating shortages and outages, and generally asking for help and readily offering it.
- Arrive to work on time. This will give you time to prepare for your shift as well as relieve those who had the shift before you.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment. Ensure that your workspace is ready to serve any menu item at all times, put away products or equipment that is not immediately being used, and clean up spills and messes immediately. Maintaining a clean workspace will not only keep you and your teammates prepared, but also contributes to a hospitable, inviting customer environment.
- Restock items and notify your manager or relevant person of shortages or problems with inventory.
- Check the customer area frequently (different cafes have different spaces): collect dirty dishes, pick up trash, organize furniture, etc.
- Wash dishes, and perform other "Daily Duties," to maintain your work environment.
- Participate in an environment of peer-to-peer accountability: offer feedback and ask questions without judgment; expect to receive the same from your teammates.
- Monitor and stay engaged with Slack and other methods of company communication.
- Perform other duties as needed or as instructed by the store manager.
If you have a passion for coffee, enjoy working in a team-oriented environment, and have excellent customer service skills, we would love to hear from you. Join our team as a barista and be part of creating memorable experiences for our customers.
