Animal Care Technician
Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter is hiring!
We are looking for a compassionate, dependable, and hardworking person to join our team as an Animal Care Technician / Shelter Assistant.
This position is primarily focused on the daily care of our shelter animals, including cleaning, feeding, handling, enrichment, and basic health care. This person will also be cross-trained to assist with front desk duties when needed, including helping with phones, adopters, applications, and general shelter communication.
Animal shelter work is rewarding, but it is also physically demanding, fast-paced, and requires a strong work ethic. Daily cleaning is a major part of this position and usually takes around 3 hours each day. Cleaning is hard work, required, and must be done correctly every shift. We need someone who understands that animal care means keeping the shelter clean, safe, and healthy — not just spending time with the animals.
Required Schedule:
The following hours are required:
Monday: 8 AM–5 PM
Tuesday: 8 AM–5 PM
Friday: 8 AM–5 PM
Saturday: 8 AM–5 PM
Additional hours may be available depending on whether the position is part-time or full-time. But these are the days we need covered currently.
Weekend and holiday availability is required because the animals need care every day, even when the shelter is closed to the public. Holidays entail working a few hours in the morning. We try to rotate.
Responsibilities include:
- Cleaning dog kennels, cat areas, and other animal housing areas daily
- Completing approximately 3-4 hours of required cleaning each shift
- Feeding, watering, bathing, and providing daily care for animals
- Walking dogs and providing enrichment, exercise, and socialization
- Safely handling dogs and cats of different sizes, breeds, and temperaments
- Assisting with vaccinations, deworming, preventatives, treatments, and basic animal care
- Helping restrain animals safely for veterinary care or medical treatment
- Monitoring animals for signs of illness, injury, stress, or behavior concerns
- Keeping accurate records of feedings, treatments, behavior notes, and animal updates
- Doing laundry, dishes, trash, sweeping, mopping, and general shelter cleaning
- Helping keep the shelter organized, sanitary, and presentable for the public
- Assisting with animal photos, videos, kennel cards, and basic profile information when needed
- Helping with adoptions, meet-and-greets, and animal introductions
- Cross-training to assist the front desk as needed
- Answering phones and helping with basic questions from the public as needed
- Helping with adoption applications, adopter communication, and scheduling when needed
- Assisting with intake paperwork, animal records, and basic computer tasks
- Working with volunteers, community service workers, adopters, fosters, and rescue partners in a professional manner
- Following shelter policies, cleaning protocols, and animal handling procedures
- Other duties as assigned by management
Requirements:
- Previous animal care, shelter, kennel, rescue, or veterinary experience preferred (but will train the right person)
- Must understand that cleaning is a required and major part of the job
- Must be comfortable handling dogs and cats of different sizes and temperaments
- Must be dependable and able to show up on time for scheduled shifts
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment
- Must be able to stand, bend, lift, walk dogs, clean kennels, mop, do laundry, and work on your feet for most of the shift
- Must be able to follow cleaning protocols and complete tasks correctly
- Must be able to work well with coworkers and take direction from management
- Must be kind, professional, and respectful when working with the public
- Must be willing to be cross-trained and help in different areas of the shelter when needed
- Must be available to work the required schedule listed above
- Weekend and holiday availability required
- Drug testing and background check may be required prior to hiring
Noah’s Ark is closed to the public on Thursdays and Sundays, but the animals still need care every day.
