The Office of General Counsel for the Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) is responsible for advising the DFA on complex legal issues, representing DFA before external stakeholders, and ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. Additionally, the Office of General Counsel advised on a range of legal issues, including state budget, bond financing, capital outlay, financial control, local government oversight, and federal awards, for DFA's seven divisions. The Office of General Counsel also overseesf DFA's response to Inspection of Public Records Requests (IPRA) , rule makings, and legislative affairs.
Why does the job exist?
The Senior Paralegal will support the Department of Finance and Administration Office of General Counsel by performing tracking, organizational, and other legal support tasks to assist attorneys in providing a range of New Mexico and federal constitutional, statutory, and regulatory analyses, provide legal advice on complex matters, and representing the Department before external stakeholders on complex and sensitive matters. The Paralegal will also draft legal documents, perform legal research, respond to Inspection of Public Records requests, file documents, calendar cases, manage rule updates, and perform other duties as assigned under the supervision of the attorneys.
How does it get done?
- Assist in the preparation and maintenance of legal records, reports, and agreements.
- Draft legal instruments, correspondence, deeds, easements, releases, and agreements.
- Conduct legal research and prepare reports for attorney review.
- Organize and track litigation files and calendar litigation, ensuring all documents are accessible to attorneys and response dates are identified.
- Assist attorneys in preparing legal arguments, drafting pleadings and motions, and obtaining affidavits.
- Coordinate administrative support activities and interact with the public, businesses, and other organizations.
- Develop and maintain case management and tracking systems.
- Notarize documents and file them in courts or with the appropriate authority.
- Serve summonses, subpoenas, and other legal papers.

Minimum Qualification
Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies and two (2) years of work experience drafting and preparing legal correspondence, conducting legal research, and maintaining a case management/tracking system. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
