RVT - Registered Veterinary Technician
WAVES Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital | San Leandro, CA
Job Type: Full-time
A Little About Us
Washington Avenue Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital (WAVES) is a locally doctor-owned emergency and specialty hospital serving the East Bay, founded by longtime veterinary clinicians and leaders who previously built their careers at Bay Area Veterinary Specialists (BAVS). When BAVS closed its doors, our founding team came together to make sure the East Bay didn't lose access to high-quality emergency and specialty care.
As a locally owned hospital, decisions here are made by the doctors and leaders who actually practice medicine on our floor — not from a corporate office.
Located in San Leandro, our hospital offers easy access to Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco — with the food, culture, and outdoor access of the greater Bay Area right outside our door.
The Role
As an RVT, you'll work alongside our internal teams, providing skilled nursing care for a caseload you won't find in general practice. This is a role for a technician who wants to grow their clinical skill set in a true specialty setting, working shoulder-to-shoulder with specialists and learning as you go.
You'll be involved in:
- Patient care and monitoring for complex medical, oncology, and surgical cases
- Placing catheters, running diagnostics, and assisting with advanced procedures
- Anesthesia monitoring and recovery for specialty and surgical patients
- Possible overlap with specialty services
- Client communication and education alongside our specialists
You'll Never Practice Alone
Collaboration is central to how we work at WAVES — whether that's a quick hallway consult, shared case management, or hands-on mentorship from doctors and senior technicians who built their careers on this kind of teamwork.
- Experienced specialists in Internal Medicine, Oncology, and Surgery and Radiation Oncology
- A skilled team of fellow technicians and support staff
- A culture that encourages questions, learning, and teamwork
The Facility & Medicine
Our hospital occupies the former BAVS location in San Leandro, equipped to support a wide range of specialty and emergency cases. We emphasize high-quality medicine, efficient workflows, and cross-department collaboration to get the best outcomes for our patients and their families.
You can expect:
- A diverse and interesting specialty caseload
- Advanced diagnostics and treatment capabilities
- Strong technician utilization — you'll practice at the top of your license
- A team-first approach to patient care
Scheduling & Work-Life Balance
We understand the demands of specialty medicine and prioritize flexibility and sustainability. Specialty services run Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
- Full-time schedule within our specialty department hours
- Flexible scheduling options
- Collaborative approach to building schedules that work for you
This role can sometimes call for on call ER surgeries and overtime. These shifts are optional and additionally compensated
Who We're Looking For
- Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT/LVT/CVT) license required
- Specialty experience in Internal Medicine, Oncology, or Surgery preferred but not required
- Comfortable with anesthesia monitoring, catheter placement, and diagnostic sample collection
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset
- A passion for high-quality patient care and growing your clinical skill set
Both experienced specialty technicians and RVTs looking to grow into advanced medicine are encouraged to apply.
