General Job Description:
Position Overview
The HVAC Designer supports residential HVAC design and estimating by preparing system layouts, load calculations, equipment selections, and project documentation while ensuring accuracy and code compliance. This role collaborates with internal teams and project partners using AutoCAD, Right Suite Universal, and other tools to develop efficient and constructible HVAC solutions.
Primary Responsibilities

Prepare and update residential HVAC system designs, layouts, technical drawings, schematics, and related project documentation using AutoCAD, Right Suite Universal, and other applicable design software.

Perform heating and cooling load calculations for residential projects across a variety of geographic locations within the continental United States.

Size and select appropriate HVAC equipment, including heating and cooling units, ventilation systems, ductwork, and controls, in accordance with ACCA Manual S and applicable design standards.

Review project plans, specifications, scopes of work, and other documentation to determine HVAC design and estimating requirements.

Ensure HVAC designs comply with applicable local, state, and national building codes, regulations, industry standards, and company requirements.

Coordinate with builders, engineers, project managers, field teams, electrical, plumbing, and other disciplines to integrate HVAC systems into overall building designs and identify potential conflicts.

Utilize AutoCAD and applicable clash detection processes to identify and help resolve design and system coordination concerns.

Prepare and maintain accurate design calculations, equipment schedules, project files, reports, and technical documentation within company systems.

Incorporate energy-efficient solutions and sustainable practices into HVAC system designs and assist in establishing target volumes for duct testing.

Assist with project bidding and estimating activities, including performing takeoffs of materials, equipment, and labor using estimating software.

Assist with preparing project proposals and maintaining, monitoring, and updating bid templates and estimating information as directed.

Collaborate with project managers and operational teams to address design-related issues and provide technical support during bidding, project execution, and construction.

Maintain a fundamental understanding of HVAC materials, equipment, installation methods, and field applications to support practical and constructible designs.

Stay current on applicable building codes, industry standards, regulations, design practices, and emerging HVAC technologies.

Maintain professionalism and effective communication throughout all interactions with customers, builders, coworkers, vendors, subcontractors, and business partners.

Proficiency in Right Suite Universal, Elite HVAC design software, CAD tools, estimating software, and Microsoft Office preferred.

Fundamental understanding of HVAC materials, equipment, and field applications.

Ability to support estimating activities, including material, equipment, and labor takeoffs.

Strong customer service, collaboration, and project coordination skills.

Willingness to learn and remain current on HVAC technologies, codes, standards, and design practices.

Ability to pass pre-employment screenings such as background and motor vehicle record checks.

English speaking, reading, and writing preferred, and required where necessary to perform job duties.

Education/Experience
-
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Design, or a related field preferred.
-
Entry- to mid-level HVAC design, field, estimating, drafting, or related construction experience preferred.

Experience with residential new construction and HVAC system design preferred.
-
Experience using AutoCAD required.
-
Experience with Right Suite Universal, Elite HVAC design software, or similar HVAC design platforms preferred.
-
Experience performing residential heating and cooling load calculations and equipment sizing preferred.
-
Knowledge of ACCA Manual S, building codes, HVAC regulations, and applicable industry standards preferred.
-
Experience reviewing construction plans, specifications, performing takeoffs, or supporting project bidding and estimating is a plus.
-
Relevant HVAC, design, engineering, or industry certifications or licenses preferred, and required where necessary to perform job duties.
Physical Requirements

Communicate in person, by phone, and through email.

Work in a typical office environment, sitting at a desk and performing prolonged computer and CAD work, with occasional standing, walking, bending, and reaching.

Maintain dependable transportation and consistent, reliable attendance to meet project and operational needs.

Ability to exercise sound judgment and make independent decisions within established company policies, procedures, design standards, and project requirements.

Ability to work overtime, modified schedules, or occasional weekends as business needs require.

Travel as required to support project, field, and operational needs.

Perform all work on-site and in person Monday through Friday in the Carrollton, Texas area; this is not a remote or hybrid position.

Lift, carry, push, and pull at least 25 pounds.
