The Role
Distinct Engineering Solutions, Inc. has a full-time opening for an Environmental Engineer at our North Brunswick, NJ office to support infrastructure projects located in New York City. We welcome both entry-level and mid-level candidates—from recent graduates eager to build hands-on experience to engineers with a few years of environmental work ready to take on greater responsibility. You'll gain (and grow) experience across soil, groundwater, and air contaminant identification and the implementation of remedial technologies, working alongside our senior engineering staff.
You will split your time between our office and project field sites, with direct exposure to the regulations, monitoring, and reporting that drive complex environmental projects in New Jersey and New York. We are looking for a motivated, detail-oriented engineer who is eager to learn and grow with us.
What You'll Do
- Assist with field sampling and monitoring of soil, groundwater, air, and noise.
- Support site characterization, stormwater pollution prevention, erosion control, and spill prevention activities.
- Prepare and contribute to work plans, project specifications, and technical reports.
- Collect, organize, and analyze field and laboratory data.
- Travel to project sites in New York City for inspections and monitoring.
- Use AutoCAD and/or MicroStation to support design and documentation tasks.
- Mid-level candidates may also help direct field activities and mentor junior staff.
Certifications & Credentials
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification — passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, or actively pursuing. Strongly preferred.
- OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response) — required, or willingness to obtain upon hire.
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification — required, or willingness to obtain upon hire.
- OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety certification — required, or willingness to obtain upon hire.
- Path to Professional Engineer (PE): candidates working toward NY PE licensure are encouraged to apply; we support your licensure journey.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental or Civil Engineering (or a closely related field).
- 0–5 years of experience; recent graduates, internship experience, and early-career professionals all welcome.
- Coursework, internship, or working familiarity with environmental regulations—such as NYSDEC, US EPA, NYSDOL, NYCDEP/OER, and NJDEP—covering areas like stormwater, erosion control, asbestos, lead-based paint, PCBs, universal waste, and waste characterization. (Don't worry if you don't know them all—we'll help you learn.)
- Exposure to AutoCAD and/or MicroStation is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail with solid analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Good organization, communication, and report-writing skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
- A valid driver's license and a vehicle for travel to project sites.
- Willingness to work in both office and field settings, including occasional overtime on weekdays or weekends depending on project needs.
