We train the repair skills. You bring the work ethic and the people skills.
Mobility City® of Grand Rapids sells, rents, and repairs power wheelchairs, scooters, and lift chairs, and the work we do helps people stay independent and get out of the house. We’re hiring a full-time field service technician, and you don’t need prior experience with mobility equipment, because we’ll train you.
You’ll start out working alongside our lead technician, who trains you and backs you up while you learn the equipment. As you get up to speed you’ll take on your own route in a company van, and that means walking into customers’ homes, often to help an older adult whose equipment quit on them and who is counting on you to fix it and leave them feeling steady again.
What you’ll do
- Run an assigned route in a company van across the Grand Rapids area, with the lead technician supporting you while you get started (van, tools, and fuel provided)
- Diagnose and repair scooters, power wheelchairs, and lift chairs, all covered in your paid training
- Replace batteries, motors, wiring, and electronic controllers, and work with diagnostic tools like a multimeter
- Handle routine check-ups and preventive maintenance, and follow safe work practices on every call
- Install new equipment in customers’ homes
- Put anxious customers at ease, explain repairs in plain terms, and make sure they feel confident before you leave
- Complete service notes and restock your van at the showroom
What we’re looking for
- A valid driver’s license, since you’ll be in a company van from your first week
- Someone dependable who takes ownership of the work and responds well to direction
- A warm, confident presence people trust in their home
- Comfort with basic tools and real curiosity about how things work (formal repair experience is not required)
- Able to lift up to 75 pounds, with or without a reasonable accommodation
- Available for occasional weekend work, since rentals and white-glove deliveries sometimes fall on a Saturday
- Willing to learn, and we’ll teach you the rest
Helpful but not required: any experience working with your hands. Auto or auto parts, appliance or electronics repair, small engine, bike, powersports, handyman or home projects, building or maintenance work, or serious DIY all count, and it doesn’t have to be professional experience. Route driving, delivery, or install work counts for a lot here too, since you already know what a full day of stops feels like.
What we offer
- Paid, hands-on training that turns you into the technician
- Company van, tools, and equipment
- A Monday through Friday daytime schedule with your nights back
- PTO and paid time off
- Raises as your skills grow
- A small team where your work matters and there’s room to grow as we do
We’re hiring right away.
Employment is contingent on a background check and a motor vehicle record check, since we work in customers’ homes and you’ll be driving a company van.
Mobility City of Grand Rapids is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants of every background and hire based on ability, attitude, and fit for the role.
