SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: This position is responsible for creating an environment favorable to learning and personal growth of students enrolled in the adult basic education setting; establishing effective rapport with students, assisting students with overcoming challenges that impede learning, assisting students in making educational, occupational, and personal decisions that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women and establishing quality relationships with parents and other colleagues. This role requires daily interpersonal contact with a wide variety of internal and external constituencies, along with excellent organizational and time management skills. Employee will need to exercise sound judgment, adapt readily to changing situations, and perform detailed work independently with minimal supervision.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Works in cooperation other Instructors, under the direction of the Director of Adult Basic Education and Job Foundations and to maintain continuous and professional operations Serves as the primary instructor for the ABE program at the Burlington County Jail.Provide academic instruction with on-line resources and/or in-person, in individualized and group settings that address the unique needs of the students.Assists principals, administrators and teachers with understanding alternative education and making appropriate referrals for student placement;Develops a process to transition identified students into the adult basic education and job foundations program and provides transitional support for students entering, exiting or re-entering the program;Develops programs of study that meet individual needs, interests and abilities of students;Coordinates employment opportunities and training opportunities for ABE students;Develops strategies for helping students prepare for and transition to post-secondary education, including workshops pertaining to financial aid and scholarship applications, college entrance processes, and tutoring or mentoring projects;Works with faculty, counselors, administrators and parents/guardians to establish educational and behavioral goals for identified students including strategies for improving student achievement and behavior;Schedules and attends meetings (i.e., parent/teacher meetings, etc.) for the purpose of gathering and disseminating information, as well as to provide training to parents/guardians;Responsible for group dynamics in an advisory capacity;Advocate for, and on behalf of, students and families;Effectively models, instructs and assists students socially, academically and psychologically to be functional citizens after graduation; Serves as a representative for the adult basic education and job foundations program and advocates for the needs of individual students;Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities;Perform other related duties as assigned.OVERALL PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITY: The primary and most important overall responsibility of all employees is to provide service in a pleasant, helpful, and effective manner to our students and other members of the College community.
