LABORER- HIGHWAY (SANITATION)

Full-Time Local 1033 Union Position – 40 hours / week
The DPW Laborer is an unskilled Town position that requires heavy manual labor-intensive work that includes the collection of refuse for the Town of Lincoln. Employees are responsible for carrying and loading refuse containers and other necessary materials onto a sanitation truck. The job requires physical strength and stamina and the ability to work under adverse weather-related conditions. Work is typically performed as a member of a small crew under the direction of an assigned Highway Supervisor.
ESSENTIALS DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
Required to carry refuse/trash containers from the Town’s sidewalks and load trash onto a sanitation truck;
Must be able to operate a packer;
Required to Empty dumpsters and pick up heavy refuse/trash containers;
Required to pick up and carry collected brush, leaves and other forms of debris;
Will assist with all Town of Lincoln snow removal and/or any DPW or storm related emergency situations;
May be assigned other related DPW work duties, as needed;
May be called into work for overtime, if necessary;
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to learn and operate a packer safely and efficiently;

Ability to perform heavy manual labor-intensive duties for extended periods of time and at times under adverse weather conditions;

Ability to understand and follow instructions;

Must be at least 18 years of age

High School Diploma or equivalent GED

CDL Class B License Preferred

CDL Driver/Laborer – Public Works (Rhode Island)
Position Summary
The CDL Driver/Laborer performs skilled work in the operation of commercial vehicles and heavy equipment in support of municipal public works throughout the Town/City. Duties include roadway maintenance, snow and ice removal, sanitation support, drainage work, and general labor activities. Employees in this position are expected to work safely, respond to emergencies, and assist in maintaining public infrastructure and services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operate CDL-required vehicles including dump trucks, plow trucks, sanders, catch basin trucks, and other municipal equipment

Perform road and highway maintenance including pothole repair, asphalt patching, drainage work, and roadside maintenance

Assist with snowplowing, sanding, salting, and ice removal operations during storms and emergencies

Load, transport, and unload materials, tools, debris, and equipment

Perform manual labor including digging, lifting, shoveling, raking, sweeping, landscaping, and construction-related tasks

Install and repair street signs, guardrails, and traffic control devices

Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment

Perform basic preventative maintenance and report mechanical problems

Follow all applicable safety regulations including DOT and municipal policies

Respond to emergencies, weather events, flooding, sewer backups, and other public works incidents

Work overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays as required for emergency operations

Perform other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED
-
Valid Rhode Island Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B minimum

Air Brake endorsement required

Acceptable driving record

Ability to perform strenuous physical labor in all weather conditions

Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
Preferred Qualifications
-
Prior experience in municipal public works, highway, utility, or construction work

Hoisting Engineer License preferred

Experience operating snowplows and heavy equipment
-
Knowledge of roadway maintenance and stormwater systems
Physical Requirements

Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 75 pounds

Ability to stand, walk, climb, kneel, and bend for extended periods

Ability to work outdoors year-round in adverse weather conditions

Ability to safely operate heavy machinery and power tools
Work Environment
Work is performed primarily outdoors and may involve exposure to traffic, loud noise, dust, chemicals, heavy equipment, and hazardous weather conditions.

Mandatory overtime and emergency response required during snowstorms, hurricanes, flooding, and other emergencies
