JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The School Police Sergeant is directly supervised by the Assistant Chief and is responsible for supporting the overall vision and mission of the School Safety Division by providing direction and support to School Police Officers and School Security Aides. The School Police Sergeant will have an oversight of a network of schools and work collaboratively with the Office of School Performance and School Leaders to provide support in strengthening school safety for students and staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Leads, directs, plans, and monitors the work of assigned School Police Officers and Security Aides to ensure operational effectiveness, while not serving in a formal evaluative capacity.
2. Conducts routine inspections of personnel within assigned sector(s) to ensure compliance with uniform appearance, equipment, and vehicle standards.
3. Document accurate and timely records of employee conduct in alignment with departmental policies, supporting accountability and continuous improvement.
4. Oversees security operations for extra-curricular events by assigning officers, determining staffing deployment, and ensuring adherence to safety protocols and proper incident management.
5. Coordinates activities with other law enforcement agencies to ensure a unified approach to security concerns and incidents.
6. Conducts and supervises criminal investigations within the school district’s jurisdiction, ensuring proper documentation and compliance with legal procedures.
7. Establishes and maintains positive relationships with school administration, staff, and community stakeholders, working collaboratively to address and resolve security concerns.
8. Prepares detailed police reports, ensuring accurate documentation of incidents, and attends court proceedings.
9. Reports safety concerns or staff misconduct to the Assistant Chief and/or Chief of Police.
10. Surveys school buildings regularly, identifying potential safety risks and recommending additional safety measures for implementation.
11. Acts as a field training officer for new Police Officers, providing guidance and support to ensure effective on-the-job learning.
12. Provides training to all District employees on safety protocols and procedures.
13. Makes arrests as appropriate and in accordance with department policies and legal procedures.
14. Conducts daily roll calls with police officers to ensure proper briefing, assignments, and readiness for duty.
15. Resolves and assist with problems that threaten the orderly operation of the school environment, working quickly and efficiently to maintain safety within the scope of the Sergeant position.
16. Reviews and approves officers’ police reports for accuracy and completeness, ensuring proper documentation of all incidents.
17. Enforces local, state, and federal laws as well as district safety regulations, ensuring compliance and clearly communicating rules and policies.
18. Renders first aid when necessary, coordinating with emergency responders to provide timely access to the school and ensure appropriate care for students and staff in need.
19. Acts as the liaison between the school principal and safety personnel, ensuring effective communication and coordination of security efforts.
20. Conducts meetings with security personnel, within assigned sector, to discuss operational issues, address concerns, and ensure a cohesive approach to school safety.
21. Monitors city police radio and may deploy law enforcement personnel to calls requesting or requiring police and enforcement services.
22. Other relevant duties as assigned by supervisor related to the essential function of the position in support of the department’s or school’s goals and objectives and the District’s mission and Superintendent’s Priority Goals.
EDUCATION REQUIRED
· Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field. A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered in lieu of a minimum degree.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE REQUIRED
Act 177 (formerly Act 120) certification required.
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
6 years of experience in law enforcement, school safety, and/or public safety, 3 years must be in a leadership or supervisory capacity, preferably as a PPS Police Officer.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
· Must obtain arrest powers both via the school district and courts.
· Valid Pennsylvania driver's license, dependable vehicle, and automobile insurance required.
· Knowledge of court procedures, security measures, policies, procedures, crisis management and local, state, and federal laws related to safety.
· Experience serving in a leadership or supervisory capacity.
· Proven ability to effectively communicate, connect with, and guide students, families, and community members away from behaviors that will lead to violence.
· Exhibit integrity, and good moral character.
· Proven conflict resolution skills.
· Experience documenting and maintaining incident reports, case files, and administrative records using both written and electronic systems.
· Ability to effectively manage time, personnel, and resources to ensure patrol coverage, case follow-ups, and other unit responsibilities are met.
· Ability to prioritize workload and make strategic decisions under pressure.
· Ability to cultivate relationships, work independently and collaboratively as a team player, under pressure with multiple competing deadlines, and with culturally, educationally, and racially diverse internal and external customers.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate with both care and authority.
· Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
· Enthusiastic about the fundamental goal of advancing student achievement in an urban public school district.
