Position Summary
The Director of Navigation is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing resident support services, case management, life skills programming, and supportive counseling at Joseph’s House for Women. The Director provides strategic direction for resident development initiatives while ensuring residents receive individualized support, access to community resources, and opportunities to build the skills necessary for long-term stability and self-sufficiency.
The Director directly supervises the Resident Navigators and provides leadership for all resident-centered programming.
Working collaboratively with the Director of Residential Services and Director of Workforce Development, the Director of Navigation ensures an integrated approach to resident growth and transformation. This position reports to the Assistant Director for Operations and serves as a key member of the leadership team.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision (30%)
· Supervise, coach, and evaluate Resident Navigators.
· Foster a culture of accountability, compassion, professionalism, and resident-centered care.
· Provide regular supervision, case consultation, and professional development opportunities for direct reports.
· Ensure consistent implementation of case management practices and resident support services.
· Participate as a member of the organization’s leadership team.
· Assist with policy development, program evaluation, and strategic planning related to resident services.
· Monitor program outcomes and recommend improvements to strengthen resident success.
Resident Navigation & Support Services (25%)
· Oversee individualized resident service planning and goal-setting processes.
· Ensure residents are connected to appropriate community resources, healthcare, housing, education, employment, and public assistance programs.
· Support staff in addressing complex resident situations, barriers, and crises.
· Maintain quality standards for documentation, case notes, assessments, and service records.
· Collaborate with community partners and service providers to expand resources available to residents.
Supportive Counseling & Resident Well-Being (20%)
· Provide supportive counseling, emotional support, and crisis intervention to residents as needed.
· Conduct assessments and assist residents in identifying strengths, challenges, and personal goals.
· Facilitate individual or group sessions addressing topics such as trauma recovery, healthy relationships, parenting, stress management, and emotional wellness.
· Support residents experiencing challenges related to mental health, domestic violence, substance use recovery, grief, or trauma.
· Provide referrals to licensed clinical providers and specialized services when appropriate.
· Train and support staff in trauma-informed care, de-escalation techniques, and resident engagement strategies.
Programming & Life Skills Development (15%)
· Direct the planning, development, and evaluation of life skills programming and educational workshops.
· Ensure programming aligns with resident needs and organizational goals.
· Coordinate with staff, volunteers, and community partners to deliver high-quality educational opportunities.
· Monitor participation, outcomes, and resident feedback to continuously improve programming.
· Support curriculum development in areas including financial literacy, parenting, employment readiness, communication skills, health and wellness, and independent living.
Cross-Department Collaboration (10%)
· Collaborate closely with the Director of Workforce Development to align resident support services with educational and employment goals.
· Partner with the Director of Residential Services to address resident needs, behavioral concerns, and community living expectations.
· Participate in resident case reviews and interdisciplinary planning meetings.
· Assist with admissions, resident transitions, and discharge planning when needed.
Qualifications
Required
· Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, Counseling, Education, or a related field.
· Minimum of five years of experience in social services, case management, counseling, housing services, or related human service settings.
· Minimum of two years of supervisory or leadership experience.
· Demonstrated experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, trauma, mental health challenges, substance use disorders, or domestic violence.
· Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
· Ability to lead with compassion while maintaining professional boundaries and accountability.
· Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Preferred
· Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Human Services, or related field.
· Experience providing supportive counseling or coaching services.
· Knowledge of trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and strengths-based practices.
· Familiarity with community resources and service systems throughout Central New York.
· Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
Physical & Schedule Requirements
· Ability to travel locally throughout the Syracuse community.
· Ability to participate in occasional evening or weekend activities and events.
· Ability to respond to resident crises and support staff when needed.
· May participate in an on-call leadership rotation.
