Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and safety-focused CDL Class A Driver to operate a tractor with flatbed trailer hauling a diverse mix of chemical freight, including ISO tank containers, dry van containers, drums, and IBCs (Intermediate Bulk Containers). This role requires strict adherence to DOT, OSHA, and hazmat regulations while ensuring secure, on-time delivery.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Safely operate a Class 8 tractor with flatbed trailer to transport containers, chemical isotanks, drums, and IBCs/totes.
- Secure loads using proper flatbed securement techniques: chains, binders, straps, corner protectors, edge protectors, and bracing appropriate for tank containers vs. palletized drums/IBCs.
- Handle hazmat freight in compliance with 49 CFR, including proper placarding, shipping paper review, and emergency response awareness.
- Perform pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections on tractor, trailer, and specialized equipment (tank chassis, twist locks, B-train connections).
- Verify load integrity at pickup and delivery; check seals, labels, SDS compatibility, and weight distribution.
- Interact with port terminals, rail yards, chemical plants, and warehouses; present required credentials and follow site-specific safety protocols.
- Maintain accurate HOS logs via ELD, complete bills of lading, delivery receipts, and hazmat documentation.
- Respond appropriately to spills, leaks, or equipment failures; report incidents immediately per company policy.
- Communicate proactively with dispatch regarding delays, route changes, or load discrepancies.
Required Qualifications
- Valid CDL Class A license with a clean driving record (with verifiable experience).
- Active Hazmat (H) and Tanker (N) endorsements required; X endorsement preferred.
- TWIC card (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) or ability to obtain.
- Experience with flatbed securement for diverse load types, including tank containers and palletized chemical freight.
- Familiarity with 49 CFR Hazardous Materials Regulations, DOT hours of service, and CSA compliance.
- Ability to pass DOT physical, drug screen, and background check.
- No disqualifying offenses per FMCSA regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience hauling ISO tank containers or chemical tankers; knowledge of surge dynamics and baffle systems.
- Port drayage / intermodal experience with container twist locks and chassis management.
- Prior work with chemical, petrochemical, or industrial manufacturing clients.
- Knowledge of GHS labeling, SDS sheets, and chemical compatibility.
- Experience with liftgate, pallet jack, or drum handling equipment (if applicable to your operation).
- OSHA 10/30 or hazmat-specific safety certifications.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally; climb in/out of cab and onto trailer deck repeatedly.
- Work in various weather conditions while tarping, chaining, and securing loads.
- Extended periods of sitting, followed by physical securement activity.
- May require wearing PPE (hard hat, safety vest, steel-toe boots, respirator) at shipper/receiver facilities.
- Some exposure to chemical environments.
