Director Inventory Control
FUNCTION:
The Director of Inventory Control is a Finance leadership role responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and control of inventory across the enterprise. This position oversees inventory accounting alignment, enterprise inventory processes, and distribution center quality assurance auditing activities. The Director leads both the Inventory Control function and the Distribution Center Quality Assurance Audit team, ensuring that inventory is accurately recorded, properly counted, and supported by strong controls and data-driven insights.
INTERACTION:
- Reports to the Vice President of Finance Operations
- Partners closely with Store Operations, Distribution, Merchandising, Planning, Finance, Loss Prevention, and Technology to lead continuous improvement and support company strategic goals
- Interacts with external inventory count service providers
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES [Essential Functions]:
Inventory Control
- Own enterprise inventory accuracy, ensuring alignment between physical counts, inventory subledger, and general ledger balances.
- Develop and execute enterprise strategy to improve inventory accuracy.
- Establish and govern key inventory accuracy metrics (Gross Unit Accuracy, Book-to-physical variance, Inventory adjustment activity, Negative on-hand frequency).
- Ensure accurate and timely recording of all inventory transactions (receipts, transfers, adjustments) and partner with Technology to resolve systemic issues.
- Ensure alignment between operational practices and financial reporting requirements.
- Oversee cycle counting programs, physical inventories, and reconciliation processes.
- Support enterprise transformation initiatives (AI, automation, system upgrades).
- Ensure all inventory-related processes are documented, controlled, and audit-ready.
Distribution Center Quality Assurance
- Lead the DC Quality Assurance Audit team, responsible for validating inventory accuracy and process adherence within distribution operations and pool points.
- Oversee QA audit processes for receiving verification, ticketing and packing accuracy, and shipping validation.
- Partner with DC leadership to address audit findings and improve process consistency.
- Drive standardization of QA audit procedures and scoring across distribution centers
- Ensure QA insights translate into sustainable process improvements and reduced error rates.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Build and develop a high-performing team focused on accuracy, discipline, accountability, and data-driven decision-making.
- Partner with Store Operations, DC Operations, Merchandising, Planning, Finance, Loss Prevention, and IT to improve end-to-end inventory ntegrity.
- Provide executive reporting, performance analysis, and strategic recommendations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Supply Chain, or related field.
- 8+ years of progressive leadership experience in retail inventory control, supply chain, or distribution.
- Strong understanding of inventory accounting, inventory lifecycle process, internal controls and audit requirements.
- Experience supporting both retail store operations and distribution center environments.
- Demonstrated success leading cross-functional initiatives and developing high-performing teams.
- Strong analytical, financial, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred
- Experience in off-price, discount, or department store retail.
- Knowledge of Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), ERP, inventory management systems, and analytical tools (Power BI, advanced Excel).
- Background in process improvement, automation, or systems transformation.
