Summer Camp Counselor

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Camp Director or Camp Coordinator, the Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for the safety, supervision, and engagement of an assigned group of campers at Camp Mac Boykin. Counselors intentionally create a welcoming, inclusive, and nurturing environment where campers build confidence, develop character, and experience meaningful connections.
This position supports the YMCA’s commitment to youth development by leading activities that promote teamwork, respect, responsibility, and fun.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supervise and ensure the safety of an assigned group of campers at all times

Maintain appropriate staff-to-camper ratios and accurate headcounts during transitions

Build positive, supportive relationships with campers

Implement effective group management and positive behavior guidance

Lead structured camp activities including games, devotions, songs, and skits

Assist with lake swim supervision and maintain active engagement during water activities

Follow and enforce YMCA policies and procedures

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe program environment

Attend required staff trainings, meetings, and camp events

Report incidents, concerns, and equipment needs to leadership promptly

Support YMCA Child Abuse Prevention standards and immediately report any concerns
QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum age of 17

Passion for working with school-age children
-
Ability to swim to safely supervise campers during water activities
-
Current CPR and First Aid certification (adult, child, infant) required

Strong communication and interpersonal skills
-
Demonstrated maturity, responsibility, and sound judgment

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Strong organizational and time management skills

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions

Ability to stand, walk, and remain alert for extended periods

Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds and assist children up to 50 pounds

Visual and auditory ability to supervise children and respond to emergencies
