Position Summary
An established manufacturer of precision metal components is seeking a Tooling Engineer to support the design, development, and continuous improvement of production tooling for metal casting operations. This position plays a key role in designing patterns, core boxes, and gating/riser systems while partnering with engineering, operations, quality, and customers to ensure manufacturability, exceptional product quality, and successful production launches.
The ideal candidate will have experience in metal casting, tooling design, CAD/CAM software, and manufacturing process optimization with a strong focus on quality, scrap reduction, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop production tooling, including patterns, core boxes, gating systems, and riser systems for new and existing manufacturing programs.
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, quality, and customer teams to understand product specifications, dimensional requirements, and manufacturing tolerances.
- Create, modify, and maintain tooling designs, engineering models, and production drawings to support manufacturing requirements.
- Utilize CAD/CAM software and casting simulation tools to optimize tooling performance, improve product quality, and reduce scrap.
- Design tooling that supports efficient manufacturing processes while meeting quality, cost, and delivery objectives.
- Develop and refine gating and riser systems to improve casting consistency, reduce defects, and streamline production.
- Participate in sample builds, tooling validation, and production launches by evaluating tooling performance and recommending improvements.
- Review engineering and quality changes that impact tooling and implement design revisions as needed.
- Evaluate tooling manufacturing methods and recommend whether tooling should be produced internally or sourced externally based on complexity, cost, lead time, and available capabilities.
- Coordinate the receipt, inspection, and readiness of customer-supplied or transferred tooling for production.
- Support tooling inspections, rigging activities, and launch readiness to ensure successful implementation into production.
- Communicate project status, tooling concerns, potential delays, and cost impacts to engineering and operations leadership.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, manufacturability, process efficiency, and scrap reduction.
- Maintain compliance with safety standards, workplace organization practices, and company operating procedures.
- Complete additional engineering projects and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree or technical certification in Engineering Technology, Manufacturing, or a related discipline preferred.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in metal casting, tooling engineering, or a related manufacturing environment.
- Experience designing patterns, core boxes, gating systems, and riser systems for metal casting applications.
- Proficiency with CAD software; experience with GibbsCAM, Solid Edge, or comparable CAD/CAM platforms is preferred.
- Experience using casting simulation software to optimize tooling and manufacturing processes is highly desirable.
- Strong blueprint reading, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and engineering drawing interpretation skills.
- Excellent mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Effective communication skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering, operations, quality, and customer teams.
- Working knowledge of pattern shop operations, tooling construction methods, and manufacturing best practices.
