About the Role
Sunday Cool builds and maintains its own software — the systems our Sales, Client Experience, Art, Accounting and Production teams rely on every day, and the tools our customers use to work with us.
We are hiring a Full-Stack Software Engineer to help build, maintain and continually improve that software. The work is ongoing: reviewing and modernizing legacy systems, replacing tools the company has outgrown, and steadily improving how efficiently we operate and how well we serve our clients. As each system is completed, the focus moves to the next one.
This is a hands-on role with real ownership. You will work closely with the Director of Client Experience & Systems and directly with the departments who use what you build. The software you write is used every day by the people sitting around you, and by the customers they serve — you will see the effect of your work immediately.
What You'll Do
-
Build and maintain internal web applications end to end. User interfaces, backend services, databases and background processing — you will work across all of it rather than in one narrow layer.
-
Review and modernize legacy systems. Much of what we run has been built up over years. You will assess what exists, improve it incrementally where that is the right call, and replace it where replacement serves the business better than continued maintenance. This is a core, recurring part of the job rather than a one-time cleanup.
-
Continually improve what is already running. Reliability, performance, usability and maintainability are treated as ongoing practice, not a project with an end date. Systems that work today should work better six months from now.
-
Improve operational efficiency. Find the manual, repetitive and error-prone processes across the business and turn them into dependable software. A meaningful share of the value in this role comes from removing work nobody should be doing by hand.
-
Strengthen the client experience. Build and refine the tools and customer-facing surfaces that shape how clients place orders, track them, and work with us.
-
Integrate systems. Connect our applications to the third-party services the business depends on, and keep those connections healthy as they change.
-
Keep production healthy. Deploy safely, monitor what is running, and respond when something breaks. You will share responsibility for keeping the systems the company runs on available.
-
Partner with the business. Work directly with department leads to understand what they actually need, and turn business problems into well-scoped, reliable software. Much of the job is asking good questions before writing code.
What You'll Bring
-
3+ years of professional experience building and shipping production web applications.
-
Strong programming ability across both frontend and backend. You are comfortable moving between the interface, the service layer and the data layer.
-
Experience with relational databases — schema design, migrations and query performance.
-
Comfort working in a large existing codebase. Much of this role is reading unfamiliar code and understanding it properly before changing it. Greenfield-only experience is a poor fit.
-
The ability to own work end to end — designing, building, testing, deploying and supporting it in production.
-
Sound judgment around data integrity and safe deployment. This software handles real customer orders and real money; carefulness matters more here than speed.
-
Clear written communication and the ability to work directly with non-technical stakeholders.
-
Experience reviewing, modernizing or replacing legacy systems.
-
Integration work against third-party platforms and APIs.
-
Experience owning systems on a small team or as the sole engineer — pragmatic, self-directed, comfortable making decisions without a large team around you.
-
Exposure to accounting, invoicing, payments, e-commerce or logistics.
-
Comfort working alongside AI coding tools while retaining ownership of correctness and review.
