Survey / Layout Technician - Job Description
Summary
The Survey / Layout Technician supports field operations by performing construction layout, developing and managing 3D models, and assisting with grade control and machine control systems. This role works closely with project teams to ensure accurate placement of work in the field using surveying equipment and digital modeling tools. Responsibilities include interpreting construction plans, performing layout calculations, supporting earthwork analysis, and assisting in resolving field and plan-related issues. This position plays a key role in supporting efficient and accurate project execution across heavy civil construction projects.

Responsibilities
· Perform construction layout using Trimble GPS and robotic total station equipment
· Utilize 3D models for construction layout, grade checking, and machine control applications
· Verify field conditions and ensure layout accuracy aligns with project requirements
· Maintain records of layout data, calculations, and model information
· Support 3D machine control systems in the field
· Review construction plans and specifications to support accurate field implementation
· Identify, evaluate, and help resolve potential field issues and plan discrepancies
· Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and field personnel to support project needs
· Build and manage 3D models from construction plans using Trimble Business Center
· Assist with earthwork volume calculations and quantity takeoffs for estimating and bidding
Preferred Qualifications
· Associate or bachelor’s degree in surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred
· Equivalent combination of education and relevant field experience will also be considered
· Experience with GPS surveying equipment and robotic total stations
· Familiarity with Trimble Business Center or AutoCAD software preferred
· Strong mathematical skills with the ability to perform surveying-related calculations
· Ability to read and interpret civil construction plans and specifications
· General understanding of heavy civil construction methods and field practices
· Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on active construction sites
· Strong problem solving and analytical skills
· Self-motivated with a strong initiative and willingness to learn and grow
· Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
