Afterschool Program Staff
The Cooper School
West Ashley | Charleston, SC
The Cooper School, an independent K–8 school in West Ashley, is seeking caring, dependable adults to join our Afterschool Program team.
Our Afterschool Program is much more than childcare. It's an extension of the school day—a place where children play, create, build friendships, complete schoolwork, and unwind after a busy day of learning. Every afternoon, our staff help create an environment where students feel safe, welcomed, and known.
If you enjoy working with children and want to become part of a warm, close-knit school community, we'd love to hear from you.
Schedule
Most school days: 2:45pm – 5:45pm
Several scheduled early-dismissal days throughout the school year: 11:30am – 2:45pm
We're building a team of Afterschool staff for the coming school year. The ideal candidate is available every weekday, though we are willing to consider accommodating the scheduling needs of a “great fit” candidate.
(Because staffing is based on daily student attendance, individual shifts may end early when fewer students are enrolled for that afternoon.)
What You'll Do
- Supervise and actively engage students in grades K–8 throughout the afternoon
- Lead games, crafts, outdoor play, homework time, and other age-appropriate activities
- Help create a calm, welcoming environment where every child feels included
- Work collaboratively with fellow Afterschool staff members
- Maintain accurate attendance records
- Communicate professionally with parents during afternoon pickup
- Help keep program spaces organized, clean, and ready for the next day
Who Thrives in This Role
The strongest members of our Afterschool team share a common mindset.
They put children's safety first. They stay attentive, supervise actively, and understand that creating a safe environment is their highest responsibility.
They enjoy being with children. They're not content to simply watch from the sidelines. They join games, start conversations, encourage participation, and help students have a fun, positive end to their school day.
They work well as part of a team. They take direction well, support the shared goals and routines of the Afterschool Program, and contribute positively to the culture we're building together. When opportunities arise to help, solve a problem, or improve the afternoon for students, they step forward without needing to be asked.
Successful candidates are also:
- Dependable and punctual
- Friendly, patient, and calm under pressure
- Comfortable working with children across a wide range of ages
- Professional when interacting with parents and colleagues
- Flexible and willing to pitch in wherever needed
- Ability to pass required background checks and employment screenings
- Reliable transportation
- Ability to actively supervise children indoors and outdoors
- Ability to assist children with activities and participate in active play as needed
Why Cooper?
Children remember the adults who made them feel safe, encouraged, and valued. Our Afterschool staff have the opportunity to be those adults every single day.
If you're looking for meaningful part-time work where relationships matter and every afternoon makes a difference, we'd love to hear from you.
