Position: Staff Accountant
Start Date: Immediate Opening
The staff accountant is primarily involved with the preparation of tax returns, and in resolving technical issues associated with those tax preparation projects. The staff accountant works in a collaborative environment with other team members to develop and deliver solutions to client needs. In that role, the staff accountant will interact with members of the team at all levels and where feasible, will also interact with client personnel. Qualified supervisory personnel will work with the staff accountant to provide proper training and guidance for assisting with the completion of assigned tasks.
Client Service - Mauldin Vaught delivers value to every client through exceptional service and trusted advice. To accomplish this standard of client service, the responsibilities of the staff accountant are:
- Prepare tax returns under the direct supervision of experienced tax staff.
- Prepare work papers following the Firm’s policies and procedures.
- Prepare financial statements which may include reviewing and adjusting client’s accounting software or entering client’s transactions into accounting software.
- Assist in the preparation of responses to tax notices and audits under the direct supervision of experienced staff.
- Bring unusual or significant accounting and tax related questions to a supervisor.
- Communicate as directed by a supervisor, manager, or partner with clients regarding information needed or clarification issues.
- Demonstrate awareness of budgets on engagements and the ability to work with supervisors or managers on keeping within those budgets.
- Perform research in the area of taxation, primarily in connection with issues raised during the preparation of tax returns.
- Become familiar and comply with the Firm’s policies, procedures, manuals, forms, and relevant software.
Staff Development - The staff accountant is expected to pursue his or her own self development, as well as the development of other team members by engaging in the following activities:
- Prepare for and participate actively in Firm sponsored and outside training; keeping current on general business and technical issues.
- Seek ongoing counsel and feedback on each engagement.
- Demonstrate understanding of the value and importance of teamwork.
- Begin the development of positive relationships with peers.
Qualifications - Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, preferably with adequate accounting courses to sit for the CPA exam. Skills and Licenses: Demonstrate proficiency in use of computer and basic software applications. Demonstrate above average written and verbal communication skills. Possess successful problem-solving and analytical skills. Characteristics: Professional behavior and appearance. Honest and ethical with a strong work ethic.
