About the Role: We are seeking an enthusiastic and nurturing teacher for our preschool music classes. We believe that young children learn music the exact same way they learn their native spoken language: by being completely immersed in it before they are ever expected to perform. Before children are ready for formal instrument lessons or reading notes, they must first build a rich "listening vocabulary" by absorbing the sounds of music in a playful, pressure-free environment. In this role, you will help our youngest musicians build this crucial foundation through joyful, informal guidance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead Playful Immersion: Expose children to a rich variety of musical "flavors" and rhythms by singing and chanting a diverse mix of short, engaging tunes.
- Sing "Songs Without Words": Perform songs and chants primarily using neutral syllables (like "bum" or "bah") so that children can focus entirely on the pitch and rhythm of the music without getting distracted by lyrics.
- Provide Harmonic Support: Use basic piano or guitar skills to accompany songs with simple chords, providing a steady harmonic foundation and context while you sing.
- Encourage Free Movement: Guide students in smooth, continuous, and flowing body movements—like swaying, rocking, or pretending to float. You will help children physically feel the music in their bodies without forcing them to rigidly clap or march to a beat.
- Model, Don’t Correct: Foster a safe space where children are encouraged to experiment and "babble" musically. Rather than expecting correct musical answers or demanding they imitate you perfectly, you will guide them informally and playfully validate them by imitating their natural responses.
- Engage with Props: Utilize imaginative play and simple props like scarves, beanbags, balls, and puppets to capture their short attention spans while they unconsciously absorb the music.
- Partner with Parents: Help parents understand that true music learning takes time. Educate them on the value of simply letting their children absorb music through play, which prepares them for formal lessons when they are older.
Qualifications:
- Basic Piano or Guitar Skills: Must be able to comfortably play simple chords to accompany melodies while singing and leading the class. (Ukulele skills are a great bonus!)
- Confident and expressive singing voice, with a willingness to move freely and playfully in front of others.
- A deep love for working with preschool-aged children, with a strong understanding of their developmental stages and attention spans.
- Open-minded and willing to step away from traditional "teach and repeat" expectations to embrace a natural, immersion-based philosophy.
