Organization Summary
Green Woods Charter School (GWCS) provides children in grades K through 8 with the opportunity to be active, knowledgeable, and conscientious young investigators by fostering a keen understanding of the interdependence of and our impact on our local and global existence; creating active young stewards of the natural world. GWCS serves children primarily in the Roxborough, Manayunk, East Falls, and Germantown neighborhoods of Philadelphia.
Position Summary:
The School Nurse is a health services specialist who assists pupils and staff in attaining and/or maintaining optimum health and promoting positive health habits and attitudes. The School Nurse will be responsible for providing health programs to students in order to enhance health and wellness in the school community. The School Nurse must evaluate the physical conditions of students and refer to appropriate resources. The School Nurse must be certified as such in the State of Pennsylvania and comply with all Federal and State licensing regulations. The School Nurse reports to the Chief Operating Officer.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Access the physical well-being of the pupil in terms of developmental and present health status
- Provides direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness, and emergency care to students
- Develops policies, procedures, and work standards for school health program
- Monitors compliance of school health program with federal, state, and local laws and agencies
- Screens and conducts health appraisals for staff and students and maintains records
- Prepares health reports for supervisor, board of education and health department
- Maintains security of school health supplies
- Corresponds with parents on health needs of children
- Maintains communication with administrators, teachers, other school officials, and parents to enhance cooperative action
- Manages student health records; Records immunizations, health findings, and other relevant health data
- Provides and participated in professional development for staff as requested
- Participates in child study team process as needed
- Maintains and requests orders for equipment/supplies for nurse’s office and first aid station
- Administers medication to students as prescribed by physician
- Establishes an accident/injury prevention program to facilitate school safety
- Assess the health and safety needs in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines
- Participates as crisis team member and provides intervention for students and staff
- Makes appropriate assessments and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect
- Maintain confidentiality regarding all school and health related issues
- Additional duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Commitment to GWSC mission and belief that all students can learn
- Considerable knowledge of medical disorders and treatment
- Considerable knowledge of child growth and development
- Working knowledge of public health programs and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social service agencies
- The ability to communicate effectively with parents

Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required
- Registered Nurse (RN) license and PA School Nurse Certificate required
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation program (CPR) certification required
- Experience working in urban school and with children preferred
Physical Requirements:
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required such as:
- Functioning in office space - reaching file cabinets, filing, faxing, scanning, coping, typing, mailing, making phone calls
- Must be able to sit for up to two hours looking at a computer monitor, using a keyboard/mouse and typing
- Must be able to lift up to 25lbs on a frequent basis
