Position Overview
The Manufacturing Supervisor (2nd Shift) is responsible for leading all CNC machining operations in a high-mix, tight-tolerance contract manufacturing environment. This is a hands-on leadership role focused on driving safety, quality, delivery, and cost performance while developing team members and ensuring production goals are met. This individual serves as the primary leader for second-shift personnel and is accountable for overall shift execution and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all second-shift CNC machining operations including mills, lathes, and multi-axis equipment
- Execute production schedules in coordination with Planning, Engineering, and Operations
- Monitor and drive key performance metrics (OTD, efficiency, utilization, scrap, setup reduction)
- Identify and resolve bottlenecks related to staffing, tooling, materials, and machine capacity
- Ensure proper setup verification, first-piece inspections, and in-process quality checks
- Enforce standardized work and support setup reduction (SMED) initiatives
- Supervise, coach, and develop machinists, setup technicians, and support staff
- Lead shift start-up meetings to communicate safety, priorities, and production goals
- Drive accountability for safety, quality, and productivity across the team
- Partner with Quality and Engineering to ensure ISO compliance and customer requirements are met
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for quality issues and nonconformances
- Ensure accurate production documentation and ERP data entry
- Enforce OSHA and company safety standards; lead incident investigations and corrective actions
- Identify opportunities to improve cycle times, reduce scrap, and increase machine uptime
- Support lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives
- Provide input on hiring, performance management, promotions, and disciplinary actions
Must Haves
- 5+ years of experience in CNC machining leadership or supervision
- Strong background in high-mix, tight-tolerance machining environments
- Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop teams on the shop floor
- Experience managing production schedules and meeting delivery targets (OTD)
- Strong understanding of machining operations (mills, lathes, multi-axis)
- Experience driving performance metrics (efficiency, utilization, scrap, etc.)
- Knowledge of setup verification, in-process inspection, and quality standards
- Experience with root cause analysis and corrective actions
- Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills
- Knowledge of OSHA and manufacturing safety regulations
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities
Nice to Have
- 10+ years of CNC machining or manufacturing leadership experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Manufacturing, or related field
- Prior experience as a Plant Manager or senior operations leader
- Experience with lean manufacturing / continuous improvement (SMED, 5S, etc.)
- Familiarity with ISO quality systems and ERP/MRP systems
- Experience in contract manufacturing or job shop environments
Work Environment / Physical Requirements
- Primarily shop-floor based with office presence on the production floor
- High noise levels from CNC machining operations
- Exposure to moving machinery, tooling, and physical hazards
- Exposure to oils, cutting fluids, dust, and fumes
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching
- Occasional lifting up to 20 lbs
- Requires strong communication and ability to lead in a production environment
