Specialty Optical Fibers is a pioneering company located in Williamsburg, VA, dedicated to delivering innovative optical fiber solutions for sensing, measuring, medical, and laser applications across all industy including medical, military, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, life sciences and quantum computing, and fundamental research.
Duties
- Process customer orders efficiently, verifying specifications and creating build documents while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
- Collaborate with applications engineering and production teams to interpret design requirements and capture them in BoMs coupled to drawings using SolidWorks.
- Develop mechanical components, assemblies, and mechanical drawings appropriate for sending to 3rd party machinists to quote and fabricate.
- Adhere to GD&T principles.
- Utilize PDM (Product Data Management) software to manage revisions, version control, and project documentation effectively
- Assist in reviewing designs with technical teams, ensuring compliance with specifications.
- Develop or pull from a library of templates, the BoMs, build processes, checklists, and inspection points necessary for successful order pass off.
Skills
The Engineering Order Processing Technician (EOPT) requires an ability to understand how mechanical parts might fit together. The role requires processing information from our Applications and Sales Engineering Team and creating necessary manufacturing documents that typically include technical drawings, list of materials (BoMs), checklists, inspection forms and procedures. The EOPT role requires basic parts design or modifications using Solid Works. Training will be provided.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks for product design, mechanical drafting, and assembly creation
- Strong understanding of mechanical parts design form fit and function principles including GD&T.
- Knowledge of 2D CAD drafting techniques combined with some limited 3D CAD modeling for comprehensive design solutions.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings or written descriptions accurately translating details into product, assembly and inspection documents.
- Creating clear and complete documentation and detailed assembly drawings and specifications.
- Ability to create technical documents and understand how they are interdependent such as, Bills of Materials, Procedures, Checklists, Inspection forms, Work instructions, etc.
- Ability to conceptualize fixtures & tooling that might be helpful to assemble parts.
The Right Candidate
The right Candidate must learn to process new orders applying past templates, knowledge and problem solving. Candidate should be able to evaluate the information provided, understand what is being asked for, become familiar with templates we have available, modify those templates or conceptualize the product, and using those templates as a base, meet the described specifications. Attention to detail, accuracy and completness are critically important in this role. Candidate must be able to read through formal and informal documents and be able to pick out the applicable information.
The right Candidate must also have good communication skills in person, through email, or other digital messaging, as well as an ability to learn our internal database and have basic skills with Word and Excel.
