Clinical Assessment & Utilization Specialist

We are actively seeking a detail-oriented and compassionate professional to join our team as a Clinical Assessment & Utilization Specialist in our residential substance use treatment program. This position is ideal for individuals with experience in behavioral healthcare, clinical intake coordination, utilization review, case management, or insurance authorization within substance use and mental health treatment settings.
Position Overview
As a Clinical Assessment & Utilization Specialist, you will play a vital role in supporting client care from admission through continued treatment. This position is responsible for coordinating and completing clinical assessments, including intake evaluations, initial treatment plans, and trauma assessments, while also overseeing and participating in the utilization review process to ensure clients receive appropriate levels of care and continued treatment authorization.
You will work closely with clinical, nursing, and administrative staff to support treatment planning, maintain compliance with payer requirements, and advocate for clients throughout their recovery journey.
Full-Time Benefits

Full-time staff receive 56 hours of paid time off after 90 days of continuous employment and begin earning vacation time.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Assessment & Treatment Planning
- Complete client intake assessments upon admission
- Conduct and document initial treatment plans
- Complete trauma assessments and other required clinical screenings
- Ensure assessments are accurate, thorough, and completed within required timeframes
- Collaborate with clinical staff to support individualized treatment planning
Utilization Review & Insurance Authorization
- Coordinate, oversee, and participate in the utilization review process
- Complete and submit SUD forms and supporting documentation for continued care authorizations
- Submit and manage initial and continued stay authorization requests with insurance providers
- Review clinical documentation to ensure medical necessity and compliance with payer requirements
- Communicate with insurance companies regarding treatment approvals, denials, appeals, and authorization updates
- Track authorization timelines and proactively prevent lapses in coverage
Documentation & Collaboration
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards
- Collaborate with therapists, case managers, nursing staff, and leadership to support quality client care
- Assist with audits and quality assurance activities related to assessments and utilization review processes
- Support continuity of care by ensuring clinical and authorization documentation remains current and compliant
Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Healthcare Administration, Human Services, or a related field preferred
- Experience completing behavioral health or substance use assessments strongly preferred
- Prior experience in utilization review, insurance authorization, case management, or behavioral healthcare administration preferred
- Knowledge of substance use disorder treatment and mental health services preferred
- Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary team
