Morrison Mentors, Inc. is a nonprofit organization based in Hempstead, New York, that delivers hands-on STEM learning programs for students in grades K-12, and we rely on a team of talented instructors, mentors, and technical interns to help bring these experiences to life.
About the Role:
Morrison Mentors is seeking a caring, patient, and enthusiastic instructor with a passion for agriculture and modern growing technology to join our team. This in-person role supports classroom instruction by leading hands-on agriculture and E-farming activities, guiding students through creative growing projects, and fostering a positive learning environment where children feel confident, curious, and supported.
This is a great fit for someone pursuing a degree in agriculture, horticulture, or a related field (or graduated from college or trade school) who also enjoys working with kids, whether that experience comes from a classroom, a camp, a garden, or a family farm.
If you've worked as a camp counselor, supported after-school programs, helped children with art or craft projects, volunteered with youth groups, or simply enjoy being around young learners, your experience is highly valuable here, especially paired with a green thumb
Work Schedule
In‑person only (Instructors report to the main office and a shuttle drives them to and from our partner sites; We are located at 250 Fulton Ave, Hempstead Ny)
Availability Requirements
Spring & Fall (During the School Year) Part‑time schedule with a minimum commitment of 2–3 days per week, available between 12:00 PM–6:00 PM or 1:00 PM–6:00 PM.
Compensation: Rate of $18–$20 per hour, depending on experience.
What You'll Teach
- Our project-based curriculum blends hands-on agriculture with engineering, design, and modern growing technology. You'll guide students through activities such as:
- Designing and 3D-printing self-watering planters with moisture sensors
- Building small-scale drip irrigation systems from laser-cut or 3D-printed parts
- Running a water filtration lab paired with CNC/laser-cut lab equipment
- Molding biodegradable planters from recycled or seed-embedded material
- Constructing a vertical hydroponic micro-farm for herbs and greens
- Building simple plant health monitors using light, humidity, and soil sensors
- Guiding a student "grow & sell" entrepreneurship project, from product to pricing
- Working with seed trays, grow chambers, and grow tents to demonstrate controlled-environment growing
- Introducing aquaponic systems using repurposed aquariums to connect fish and plant systems
- Instructors also gain exposure to industry-standard equipment, including Bambu Lab and Prusa 3D printers, ShopBot CNC machines, and Roland vinyl printers.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and assist with engaging lessons and hands-on agriculture/ E-farming activities
- Support students during classroom projects, helping them stay engaged and confident
- Prepare materials for daily activities, including growing supplies, crafts, and learning centers
- Maintain an organized, welcoming classroom and growing environment
- Provide gentle guidance and encouragement to students
- Communicate effectively with teachers and staff to support classroom routines
