We are an established boutique law firm in New Paltz, New York, concentrating in Trusts & Estates, Elder Law, Guardianships, Estate Administration, and Surrogate’s Court Litigation.
We are seeking an Associate Attorney admitted to practice in New York State to join our thriving practice. The ideal candidate will have 2–5 years of legal experience, although newly admitted attorneys will be considered. Experience in our core practice areas is much preferred.
This position offers significant client contact, courtroom exposure, and responsibility. The successful candidate will be expected to manage files independently while also working closely with the firm's principal attorney and staff. We are looking for someone who is organized, personable, a strong communicator, a quick learner, and committed to providing excellent client service.
As part of the firm's long-term growth strategy, the successful candidate will be expected to become active in the local business community by participating in some networking. These activities will give an opportunity to develop networking and business development skills, build professional relationships and referral partners, and contribute to the attorney's growth and the growth of the firm.
Responsibilities
- Handle matters involving estate planning, estate administration, probate, guardianships, and related litigation.
- Draft legal documents, pleadings, motions, correspondence, and estate planning instruments.
- Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda.
- Communicate effectively with clients, courts, opposing counsel, fiduciaries, and beneficiaries.
- Appear in Surrogate's Court and Supreme Court as necessary.
- Manage assigned matters independently while meeting deadlines and maintaining high-quality work product.
- Participate in client consultations and case strategy discussions.
- Engage in professional networking and business development activities.
- Eventually join the Part 36 list for fiduciary and court-appointed roles.
Qualifications
Required:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
- Admission to practice law in New York State.
- Strong writing, analytical, and oral communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
- Ability to work independently while also functioning as a collaborative team member.
- Professional and personable demeanor with a strong client-service orientation.
Preferred:
- 2–5 years of legal experience.
- Experience in trusts and estates, elder law, probate, estate administration, guardianships, fiduciary litigation, or related areas.
- Familiarity with real estate transactions.
