JOB

Primary Purpose
Performs a variety of law enforcement services for the community, including but not limited to preventative patrol, community policing activities, criminal investigations, car crash investigations, enforcement of Federal and State Statutes, enforcement of Municipal Ordinances, medical assist responsibilities, and traffic control activities.
Supervision
Works under direct supervision of Police Sergeant, or Police Corporal in their absence, and the general supervision of the Police Lieutenant and Police Chief.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
- Patrols a designated area to preserve law and order. Issue warnings or citations to violators of city and state regulations and laws as needed, which often requires independent and decisive judgment.

Responds to in-progress or recent situations to restore or maintain order and to coordinate the gathering of information and applicable evidence.

Arrests, guards, and/or transports individuals as instructed or needed.

Prepares and presents clear, detailed, and accurate reports and other police related documents, forms, and memorandums as required.

Allocates patrol time to identify and solve business and residential problems by applying proven problem-solving techniques.

Demonstrates creativity regarding police related issues.

Monitors and directs traffic and crowd control activities and intervenes as necessary to preserve the peace.

Conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations of crimes and traffic incidents; interviews witnesses, collects and preserves evidence.

Administers emergency medical aid as needed, based on First Aid/CPR certifications obtained.

Appears in court and testifies when required.

Safely and properly operates department owned tools and equipment.

Conducts job-related education programs requiring presentations to various groups, schools, radio, and television audiences.

May be assigned as a field training officer or special assignments.

Deals effectively and courteously with fellow employees and the public. Presents themselves in a professional manner. Fosters cooperation.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Physical Demands
Vision defect cannot exceed 20/100 and must be corrected to 20/30 in both eyes; Must be able to distinguish primary colors; Must pass a post-offer medical examination including a hearing test; Must be able to reach, hold and grip; Must have lateral mobility; Must possess the manual dexterity to use a computer; Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds for a distance of at least 50 feet; Must be able to drag and/or push and pull up to 165 pounds for a distance of at least 50 feet; Must be able to walk, sit, or stand for prolonged periods; Must be able to work at heights above 100 ft or higher as needed; Must be able to crawl, run, jump, twist, climb, bend, squat, and kneel as needed.
Work Environment
May be exposed to extreme weather conditions. Will be exposed to life threatening conditions associated with firefighting, emergency medical situations, and hazardous chemicals. Exposure may be but is not limited to dust or pollen, toxic fumes, chemicals or smoke, contagious diseases, electrical or mechanical hazards, poor visibility and ventilation, extreme noise and working in cramped spaces.
