Position Title: Portfolio Manager

Position Responsibilities:
The Portfolio Manager leads a high-performing team of Program and Project Managers to ensure the successful delivery of complex, high-impact programs that drive strategic business outcomes at scale. This role provides comprehensive portfolio-level oversight across multiple, concurrent delivery engagements, driving governance, stakeholder alignment, operational excellence, and financial accountability across the organization.
Beyond portfolio leadership, the Portfolio Manager elevates the organization through mentorship, coaching, and the cultivation of a delivery culture rooted in collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate has extensive experience overseeing large and diverse program portfolios within a client-facing environment.
- Strategic Alignment & Portfolio Governance
- Own end-to-end portfolio oversight, ensuring intake, tracking, and execution of projects align to organizational priorities and drive measurable business value.
- Partner with stakeholders to prioritize projects, balancing business value, resource constraints, and risk, while maintaining momentum in a dynamic setting.
- Establish and uphold governance processes and standards that guarantee portfolio-wide transparency, consistency, and accountability.
- Manage resource allocation to ensure alignment with both strategic priorities and operational needs.
- Stakeholder Engagement & Delivery Management
- Build strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, including project managers, engineers, partners, and cross-functional teams.
- Facilitate recurring status meetings and working sessions to drive decision-making and keep programs on track.
- Maintain proactive, clear communication on team workload, performance metrics, and project progress, translating complex topics for diverse audiences.
- Use emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills to resolve conflicts and champion collaboration.
- Project Planning & Execution
- Oversee program managers in developing/implementing disciplined project plans focused on scope, schedule, and delivery under tight time constraints.
- Apply structured problem-solving methodologies to maintain portfolio progress and remove roadblocks.
- Identify and mitigate portfolio-level risks, issues, and dependencies early on; lead escalation and resolution planning for critical challenges.
- Own financial performance for the portfolio, including revenue forecasting, profit performance, utilization, backlog management, and margin improvement.
- Establish strong operating rhythms through regular portfolio, risk, and financial reviews, as well as delivery health checks with relevant team members.
- Ensure an outstanding client experience through proactive communication, accountability, and consultative engagement.
- Standardize mechanisms for tracking workload, monitoring risk, and reporting performance to deliver real-time portfolio visibility.
- Monitoring, Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Develop and deliver reports/dashboards that synthesize portfolio health, team performance, and strategic insights for leadership.
- Anticipate operational needs and devise practical, business-aligned solutions to improve execution and stakeholder satisfaction.
- Lead continuous process improvement initiatives to maximize efficiency, enhance project management, and increase value delivered.
Essential Skills, Experience
- Significant experience (10+ years) in program and project management, with at least 5 years of leadership overseeing large, complex, cross-functional IT or infrastructure programs within Professional or Managed Services environments.
- Strong leadership and strategic thinking skills, with a proven ability to manage large-scale, complex portfolios and guide multi-disciplinary teams for effective project and program delivery.
- Exceptional budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting abilities for multimillion-dollar portfolios/programs.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex concepts to stakeholders at all levels, both written and verbally.
- Strong knowledge of IT infrastructure, program governance, risk management, and project management tools/technologies (e.g., MS Project, Smartsheet, Power BI).
- Exceptional interpersonal, influencing, and conflict-resolution abilities, with a high level of emotional intelligence.
- Demonstrated capability in mentoring and developing high-performing Program and Project Managers, and driving a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in business management, engineering, or a related field required. Advanced degree (MBA or equivalent) is preferred.
- Relevant certifications such as PMP, PgMP, Agile, SAFe, or ITIL are a strong plus.
