Under the general supervision, this at-will position performs semi-skilled manual labor in the maintenance and repair of public works facilities including streets, traffic systems, sidewalks, signs, parks, graffiti removal, storm drains, tree trimming and planting, and abatement of nuisances in the public right of way; identifies and repairs plumbing issues at various City facilities; performs related duties as required. Incumbent may be rotated though various crews on a regular basis and may be assigned to work nights, weekends, holidays, and special events. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Participates in the work of a park or street maintenance crew in operating power and hand tools, edging, and weeding lawns, flower beds, and other landscaped areas; cutting and planting sod; tree trimming; spraying of pesticides; spreading seeds and fertilizer; planting or removing flowers; operating, maintaining, and repairing in-ground sprinkler systems; cleaning sidewalks, parking areas, and other areas of leaves and other debris; removing trash; operating power mowers, blowers, sweepers, edger, sprayers and other equipment or vehicles; cleaning and repairing restrooms and park equipment; road repair, pour concrete; install seasonal street banners; repair plumbing issues at City facilities; and other duties as assigned. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION Temporary / part-time employment is restricted to a certain number of hours within a 12-month period and does not qualify to receive City benefits except those required by law. The City does not belong to the Social Security system. However, enrollment in an alternative retirement program is mandatory and requires an employee contribution of 7.5% of base earnings to the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS). There are no rights to employment and employment may end with or without cause or advance notice.
SELECTION PROCESS
Following a review of all applicants, the best-qualified candidates will be scheduled for further assessment procedures. Those applicants who successfully complete the evaluation process will be further considered.
Initial appointment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a City paid physical examination, drug screening, background check and verification of U.S. Citizenship or right to work in the United States. This position is subject to and dependent on the continued availability of funds and the manpower needs of the City of Bell Gardens.
