Location: The Landing Place Family Shelter, Kalamazoo, MI
Status: Full-Time / Part-Time
FLSA Status: Hourly, Non-Exempt
Compensation: $23/hourly, comprehensive benefits package, paid time off
Position Summary
The Shelter Support Staff position is an entry-level role responsible for supporting the daily operations of the Landing Place, a shelter for families experiencing homelessness. This position ensures a safe, welcoming, and well-maintained environment for families residing in the shelter. Staff provide direct assistance with meals, respond to family needs and requests, maintain facility cleanliness, and ensure consistent staff presence throughout the building.
Shelter Support Staff play a key role in creating a respectful, trauma-informed, and family-centered environment. This role is not responsible for providing formal case management but works closely with Family Services Coordinators to support families during their stay.
Essential Responsibilities
Family Support & Engagement
- Communicate with families and maintain a visible, approachable staff presence.
- Respond to family questions, needs, and reasonable requests in a timely and respectful manner.
- Monitor common areas to ensure safety and adherence to shelter guidelines.
- Model appropriate boundaries and maintain a calm, supportive demeanor.
Meal Support
- Assist with meal setup, service, and cleanup.
- Ensure food service areas remain clean and organized.
- Support inventory and basic food storage procedures as directed.
Facility & Cleanliness
- Maintain cleanliness of common areas, dining areas, and shared spaces.
- Complete routine cleaning tasks according to established schedules.
- Report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
Operations Support
- Assist with daily shelter routines, including room turnovers, room checks, and documentation as required.
- Support program activities and family engagement efforts as directed.
- Communicate important observations or concerns to supervisors.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation when required.
- Work as part of a team, fostering healthy professional relationships with colleagues.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development.
Additional Assigned Duties
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and operations of the agency.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Experience in customer service, hospitality, childcare, or human services preferred
- Experience in crisis intervention and residential service preferred
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations, including families experiencing homelessness.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Basic organizational and cleaning skills.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Ability to pass required background checks.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to frequently lift and /or move more than 25 pounds
- Ability to occasionally lift and /or move more than 50 pounds
- Ability to perform routine cleaning tasks.

Work Environment
This position operates within the Landing Place emergency shelter, a residential setting serving families with children experiencing homelessness. This role involves direct, on-site engagement with families and collaboration with multidisciplinary staff. Shifts may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
