The Magnet Science and Technology Division of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) is seeking an exceptional individual for a Research Faculty position for magnet design and system analysis. A primary responsibility will be development of systems (including both hardware and software, LabVIEW) to detect quench of superconducting magnets and discharge the stored energy of those magnets (up to 50 MJ) quickly, safely, and in a reliable and cost-effective manner.
Another key responsibility includes electromagnetic, structural, and thermal analysis and design of new and existing high magnetic field systems employing resistive conductors and / or low and high temperature superconductors. Specific targets as outlined in our strategic plan are a 40 T all-superconducting magnet system and high-field HTS inserts up to 60 T. The incumbent will be organizing and carrying out work that includes numerical simulation (COMSOL, ANSYS, Vector Fields, Fortran, MatLab, C++, etc.), system and component testing, data analysis, among other tasks like providing studies and reports, which enables the department to develop a deep understanding of advanced high-field magnet systems and successfully design and construct such magnets.
The position will play a leading role in the development of next-generation high-field magnet systems. Presenting results in international conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals is expected. Preparation of reports and technical papers is required.
This position is flexible in the emphasis on either numerical analysis or instrumentation.
