Performance Plumbing & Heating is seeking an experienced HVAC Preconstruction Manager to lead preconstruction efforts on commercial mechanical projects throughout Massachusetts.
This is a high-impact role responsible for budgeting, estimating, design review, procurement planning, scope development, value engineering, and project readiness. You will work directly with ownership, project managers, estimators, engineers, vendors, and clients to ensure projects are properly planned, competitively priced, and positioned for successful execution.
We are looking for a motivated professional who understands commercial MEP systems, enjoys solving complex challenges, and wants to play a key role in the continued growth of a rapidly expanding mechanical contractor.
What You'll Do
- Lead HVAC preconstruction efforts from conceptual design through project turnover
- Review mechanical drawings, specifications, and contract documents to develop complete project scopes and budgets
- Prepare and review detailed estimates for HVAC equipment, ductwork, piping, insulation, controls, and related systems
- Identify scope gaps, constructability concerns, and project risks before mobilization
- Perform value engineering and system comparisons to improve project performance and profitability
- Coordinate with owners, engineers, architects, general contractors, and internal teams throughout the design and preconstruction process
- Solicit, review, and evaluate vendor and subcontractor proposals
- Manage procurement planning and long-lead equipment strategies
- Develop project schedules, milestone tracking, and readiness plans
- Review submittals and ensure scope alignment prior to project execution
- Participate in client presentations, preconstruction meetings, and executive reviews
- Support the transition of projects to operations with complete turnover documentation and clear project expectations
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of experience in HVAC estimating, preconstruction, project management, design, or mechanical construction
- Strong understanding of commercial HVAC systems including:
- VRF Systems
- VAV Systems
- Chilled Water Systems
- Boilers
- Rooftop Units (RTUs)
- Building Controls Systems
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical and architectural plans, specifications, and contract documents
- Experience developing estimates, budgets, procurement plans, and project schedules
- Familiarity with ASHRAE, SMACNA, and applicable building codes
- Experience with estimating and construction software such as Bluebeam, QuoteSoft, FastDUCT, Trimble, Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or similar platforms
- Strong communication, organization, and leadership skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
- Design-Build HVAC experience
- Commercial Mechanical Contracting experience
- Project Management experience
