Position Overview
IntelliSys is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to support the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command (MSC) engineering and design efforts. This position will provide technical expertise supporting propulsion, auxiliary, piping, and HVAC systems aboard government vessels.
While this role supports a broad range of mechanical engineering activities, candidates with strong HVAC system design and analysis experience are highly desired.
The position is primarily remote; however, candidates must reside within the Hampton Roads region and be available to perform periodic shipboard inspections and engineering assessments at facilities including Little Creek, Norfolk, Newport News, and other regional waterfront locations.
Responsibilities
As a Mechanical Engineer, you will:
- Perform engineering analyses, technical studies, and failure investigations supporting preventive and predictive maintenance initiatives.
- Develop maintenance plans and technical recommendations for ship repairs, overhauls, availabilities, and dry-docking periods.
- Analyze propulsion, auxiliary, piping, and HVAC systems to identify deficiencies and recommend engineering solutions.
- Perform HVAC system calculations, including cooling and heating load analyses, pressure drop calculations, equipment sizing, thermostat selection, and reheat system design.
- Develop mechanical calculations and engineering documentation supporting shipboard modifications and repair efforts.
- Interpret ship drawings, P&IDs, equipment manuals, specifications, and technical data packages.
- Support troubleshooting and root cause investigations involving mechanical equipment and shipboard systems.
- Provide engineering recommendations supporting propulsion, shafting, auxiliary machinery, and environmental control systems.
- Utilize engineering software to perform system modeling, calculations, equipment selection, and technical evaluations.
- Prepare clear technical reports, engineering studies, presentations, and recommendations for Government stakeholders.
- Collaborate with Government engineers, ship's force personnel, and cross-functional engineering teams throughout project execution.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Five (5) or more years of professional mechanical engineering experience.
- Active Secret Security Clearance.
- Experience developing technical reports, engineering calculations, and mechanical system analyses.
- Working knowledge of marine mechanical systems and shipboard engineering principles.
- Experience interpreting technical drawings, specifications, and equipment documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting Military Sealift Command (MSC), NAVSEA, or other U.S. Navy surface ship programs is highly desired.
Experience with one or more of the following vessel classes is a plus:
- Military Sealift Command vessels
- Aircraft Carriers
- Destroyers (DDG)
- Cruisers (CG)
- Littoral Combat Ships (LCS)
- Amphibious Assault Ships (LHA/LHD)
- Dock Landing Ships (LSD)
Experience using one or more of the following engineering tools is preferred:
- ANSYS
- FEMAP
- MathCAD
- Pipe-Flo
- AutoCAD
- SKM
- Optimoor
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Adobe Acrobat Professional
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform periodic shipboard inspections aboard vessels in port or dry dock.
- Ability to safely climb shipboard ladder wells and navigate confined engineering spaces.
- Ability to walk extended distances and climb multiple flights of stairs.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds.
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers and team members in person and through virtual collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams.
