Position Title: Pipefitter (Shop)
Reports to: Shop Superintendent
Position Status: Full Time
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Work Schedule: Standard schedule is Monday through Friday. Overtime and weekend shifts on an as-needed basis to meet production schedules.
Summary: The Shop Pipefitter is responsible for fabricating, assembling, and testing piping spools and components in a controlled fabrication shop environment prior to field installation. This role ensures pipe spools and related components are accurately fabricated to support industrial systems involving steam, water, air, gas, chemicals, and other process fluids.
Core Job Responsibilities
- Read and interpret isometric drawings, blueprints, and spool sheets
- Apply mathematics to lay out and fabricate pipe spools accurately
- Fabricate and install gaskets
- Perform cutting, beveling, and threading operations using shop machinery
- Use measuring tools and portable power tools to fit and align components
- Make fit-up decisions based on measurable tolerances and specifications
- Fit and tack pipe spools for welding per drawing specifications
- Test completed spools/assemblies (e.g., fit-check, pressure test prep) prior to shipment
- Fabricate and install pipe hangers, supports, and brackets for shop assemblies
- Install valves and components into fabricated spools
- Assist in lifting, positioning, and securing material and work pieces using shop equipment (overhead cranes, forklifts, jib hoists)
- Stage, tag, and prepare completed spools for shipment to field
- Operate shop material handling equipment as needed
- Maintain organization and cleanliness of fabrication bay and work area
- Perform other duties as required
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- Understand and carry out oral instructions
- Ability to read and carry out simple and complex written instructions
- Ability to read and interpret isometric drawings, blueprints, and spool sheets
- Assemble and disassemble objects/components accurately
- Ability to operate shop fabrication equipment and power tools (cutting, beveling, threading machines)
- Ability to operate small equipment and hand power tools
- Minimum 4 years industrial fabrication/construction/maintenance experience
- NCCER (Preferred)
- TWIC Card (if shop location requires facility access)
- Valid Driver's License
Physical Requirements:
- Stand or walk for long periods of time on shop floor
- Talk and hear to communicate with team members and supervisors
- Use arms and hands to reach for, handle, or manipulate objects, materials, and tools
- Lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift items weighing more than 50 pounds with assistance or equipment
- Work in an indoor shop environment; may include exposure to seasonal temperature variation depending on facility conditions
- Stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as needed to access work areas
- See well (naturally or with correction)
- Eye-hand coordination
- Good physical fitness
- Good sense of balance
Tool Requirements: Employees are required to utilize their own hand tools. A detailed tool list will be provided during processing.
Environment: Working conditions are those found in a typical indoor fabrication shop setting, which may include exposure to noise, welding/cutting operations, and material handling equipment in motion. This job demands the use of typical manufacturing personal protective equipment as well as advanced protective equipment as needed.
