The Controller leads the day-to-day accounting operations for the Company and its affiliated family of companies, overseeing an eleven-person accounting team across five functional departments. This hands-on leadership role owns all financial reporting, accounting system integrity, IRS compliance, and 401(k) plan administration, while serving as the primary accounting resource for executive leadership and affiliated business lines. The ideal candidate combines strong technical accounting skills with the ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-accounting audiences.
- Manage an accounting staff of eleven across five departments:
- Commissions Department (3)
- Escrow Department (2)
- Treasury (2) — one Treasury team member also supports the HR Manager with select duties
- AP / AR / Properties (2)
- Enterprise Accounting Department (2)
- Communicate with and support staff effectively and efficiently, providing direction, development, and day-to-day guidance.
- Own all financial reporting for the Company and its affiliated companies.
- Directly handle daily accounting for the parent company and investment accounts; oversee the Enterprise Accounting Department, which handles daily accounting for three affiliated business lines and properties accounting.
- Produce specialized reporting as required by leadership and business needs.
- Maintain depreciation schedules and related postings for the parent company and its property management subsidiary.
- Compile all information and manage the annual submission of financials to the outside CPA firm for the parent company and holding company.
- Apply and maintain the modified cash basis of accounting.
- Own the accounting software platform, ensuring data integrity and accuracy across the system and all reporting.
- Lead the future rollout of updated accounting software access to Regional and Office Managers, enabling them to view and pull their own reports.
- Responsible for all IRS compliance and reporting.
- Serve as Plan Administrator, reviewing and approving 401(k) disbursement requests.
- Finalize the annual 401(k) census received from the HR Manager and submit it to the TPA for testing.
- Lead the annual 401(k) audit questionnaire, with the HR Manager assisting with audit preparation and documentation uploads.
- Act as the main point of contact with the TPA for plan updates and questions.
- Serve as a voting member of the 401(k) Committee.
- Support the initiatives of the COO, President, and Chairman of the Board, along with initiatives across affiliated companies.
- Serve as the responsible party for accounting questions from affiliated companies as needed.
- Present financial results to Managers and Brokers, explaining financial statements clearly to non-accounting audiences.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA or equivalent experience preferred.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years managing a multi-department accounting team.
- Working knowledge of the modified cash basis of accounting.
- Experience administering or supporting a 401(k) plan (census, testing, audits, TPA coordination) strongly preferred.
- Strong accounting systems aptitude, including report design and user access administration.
- Excellent presentation and communication skills, with a proven ability to translate financials for non-accounting stakeholders.
- Real estate, brokerage, or multi-entity accounting experience a plus.
