The essential function of the Director position within the organization is to direct and manage operations of the County Dog Shelter. The position is responsible for supervising staff, planning, training, property management, animal health, public safety, educating the public, customer service, fundraising, budget management, promotion of positive animal welfare issues, and performing related administrative functions. The position develops and implements programs within organizational policies; reports major activities to executive level administrators through conferences and reports.
In addition to the Director responsibilities this job also entails the responsibility of a Dog Warden. This position enforces statutes governing licensing and regulation of dogs with owners (conducts license checks during complaint calls, warns owners in violation, issues citations, seizes and impounds dogs, investigates neglect and cruelty relating to dogs, etc.) Educate members of the public regarding dog laws including providing guidance on how to be compliant.
Investigates bite cases in conjunction with the County Board of Health, quarantines dogs, investigates claims for damage to animals (fowl, sheep, calves, etc.) determines if damage is done by dogs; appears in court as subpoenaed, attends arraignments, receives and responds to telephone complaints; conducts door to door dog license checks; files dog licenses, maintains shelter, cares for dogs and conditions; maintains walkways during bad weather events. Prepares and maintains records, reports and other documentation.
DUTIES AS DIRECTOR: This list represents the essential tasks performed by the position. Employees may be assigned additional duties by management as required.
Supervises staff, volunteer/community service personnel and inmates, including organizing, assigning and evaluating work, prepares yearly employee performance evaluations.
Develops short- and long-range plans for the Shelter; oversees implementation of plans to ensure adherence to organizational standards, policy and procedures, and to make adjustments as needed.
Directs and manages daily Shelter operations, including the provision of routine and medical care for animals, the performance of euthanasia as needed, maintenance and cleaning of the facility, and the animal adoption process.
Oversees and assists with the provision of customer service to the public; provides information on the animal adoption process and foster care, and educates staff and the public on humane treatment of animals; interacts with the community to promote positive animal welfare issues and recruit volunteers for the Shelter.
Develops, presents, and defends departmental budget requirements; oversees and approves expenditures, and prepares financial forms and reports; manages fundraising activities.
Implements policies and procedures for the Shelter to ensure efficient and economical departmental operations; evaluates results to ensure compliance and to identify deficiencies.
Performs administrative functions, such as preparing routine and special reports for submission to the County Commissioners, developing and administering training, or preparing periodic employee performance evaluations.
Conducts staff and other professional meetings to exchange information; attends technical or professional seminars or conferences to improve professional skills.
The Director must have knowledge of all positions at the Kennel to be able to help when needed.
Must work with all local agencies including but not limited to: Animal Clinics, Rescues, shelters from other counties, etc.
DUTIES AS WARDEN:
1) Enforce laws governing licensing and regulations of dogs. Educate members of the public regarding dog laws including providing guidance on how to be compliant.
2) Respond to calls and complaints. Document issue if warranted. (issue warning ticket, citations on seized and impound dog)
3) Must present self in a professional manner and provide clear and accurate testimony during court testimony.
4) Maintain maintenance on vehicles to ensure reliability and safety.
5) Make sure dogs are properly fed and cared for while secured in our shelter.
6) Maintain supplies and equipment to support department (dog food, uniforms, cleaning supplies, tools, and office supplies).
7) Work with Sheriff’s Office, State Highway Patrol, New Boston PD (Required to be on call after hours two weeks a month).
8) Keep logs of intake and send to Board of County Commissioners in a timely manner.
9) Properly fill out reports and deliver along with funds received from redemptions and licenses for impounded dogs.
10) Keep Maintenance done around the kennel buildings including but not limited to: mowing grass, weed eating, etc. to keep the grounds looking nice.
11) Good communication with the other Dog Warden and the Director and also in the field to ensure safety.
12) Maintain and keep records filed and organized on all work and dog related issues.
13) Good communication with public.
14) Keep office clean and organized. Keep supplies organized in kennel building and outdated dog food and trashed removed.
15) Keep walkways and sidewalk clear during inclement weather events.
16) Maintain a customer service approach to communication with the public, maintain a positive relationship with law enforcement.
17) Maintain good attendance.
18) Take after hour call on a rotating schedule including weekends and holidays, responding to urgent or emergency types of situations as outlined in policy.
19) Check email, voicemail, and Facebook Messenger regularly and respond in a timely manner.
Pay: From $25.00 per hour
