Now searching for an experienced Cardiothoracic Surgery Physician Assistant (PA) in Central California!
We are seeking a Physician Assistant (PA) to join a highly specialized Cardiothoracic Surgery team within an acute care hospital setting. This role involves providing inpatient, intraoperative, and outpatient care while working alongside and under the supervision of cardiothoracic surgeons. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in open-heart and cardiovascular surgery, including vein harvesting.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist cardiothoracic surgeons in the operating room during open-heart and cardiovascular procedures
- Perform vein harvesting for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgeries
- Provide preoperative and postoperative patient care
- Conduct patient assessments, physical examinations, and medical histories
- Monitor and manage patients throughout the continuum of care, including inpatient and outpatient settings
- Collaborate with surgeons, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary care teams
- Assist with treatment planning and care coordination
- Respond to urgent patient needs and clinical situations as required
- Document patient encounters and procedures accurately within the EMR
- Support quality patient outcomes for a complex cardiac patient population
Qualifications
Required:
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program
- Active and unrestricted California Physician Assistant License
- Current NCCPA Certification
- Active DEA Registration
- Current BLS and ACLS Certifications
- Extensive clinical experience in Cardiac Surgery and/or Cardiothoracic ICU
- Proven experience with open-heart and cardiovascular surgical cases
- Demonstrated experience in vein harvesting
- Strong communication, clinical, and teamwork skills
Practice Details

- Team Structure: 2 Cardiothoracic Surgeons and 1 NP (Clinic/Floor)
- Annual Case Volume: Approximately 270 cases per year
- Case Mix: CABG, Valve Procedures, VATS
- Patient Population: Older adults (60+) with comorbidities including diabetes and chronic kidney disease
Schedule
- Typical schedule: Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week
- Day shifts with hours varying based on surgical case volume
- On-call responsibilities include:
- 1 to 2 weeknights per week
- 1 weekend day every 2 weeks
- Approximately 10 on-call days per month
- Exact schedule may vary based on patient and surgical needs
