As a mid-sized nonprofit with a team of more than 50 professionals, Turning Point is proud to provide comprehensive domestic violence services to McHenry County. We are seeking a motivated individual to join our team and make a difference in the lives of individuals and the community.
Position Summary:
The Children’s Domestic Violence Advocate/Counselor provides counseling, support, and empowering education to children and adolescents who have witnessed or experience domestic violence, providing care through comprehensive intakes, assessments and individualized treatment plans. This role involves direct counseling, education, and support within the shelter and off-site programs, as well as facilitating support groups and family counseling sessions. The position prioritizes the safety and well-being of children and adolescents, ensuring all services are delivered with compassion and a trauma-informed approach.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Complete intakes, assessments, and treatment plans for children/adolescents (age 5-17) who have witnessed domestic violence and/or are victims.
2. Provide counseling, education, and support to children and adolescents in the shelter and in the domestic violence program, including programs off-site as needed.
3. Prepare lesson plans and facilitate support groups for children and adolescents around issues related to domestic violence.
4. Facilitate family counseling and educate parents on issues relating to domestic violence, children and trauma where appropriate and meets treatment plan goals. (Only with parents identified as non-abusers)
5. Provide counseling and assessments, including safety planning, for children 0-5 in the shelter as needed.
6. Advocate for children/adolescents including case management with parents and other providers, referral and linkage to other services, and systems advocacy, including all responsibilities of role as a mandated reporter.
7. Provide in house on call crisis services for victims of domestic violence as needed.
8. Maintain files and all required paperwork daily.
9. Incorporate cultural considerations into service planning, delivery, and advocacy.
10. Participate in:
- Staff meetings
- Case management meetings
- Department meetings
- Clinical supervision meetings (individual and group)
- Continuing education and in services
11. Other tasks as assigned by Supervisor, Clinical Services Manager
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, Education, Art therapy or related field (required)
- Experience working with children/adolescents (required)
- Bi-lingual (Spanish) (preferred)
- Education in domestic violence or trauma (preferred)
- Master’s degree/LPC, LSW/ license eligible (preferred)
- Must be ICADV certified within one year of hire.
