The City of Eugene Spay & Neuter Clinic is seeking part-time/relief animal care staff to join our team in the role of an experienced Veterinary Assistant (VA).
Candidates should possess a deep love for animals, enjoy working with the public, and be able to multi-task in a busy veterinary clinic environment. The ideal candidate will be a team-oriented, self-motivated staff member, with strong communication skills, a positive attitude, dedication to client service and comfort in working with diverse populations and teams.
Must have excellent attention to detail, be able to multi-task, and adapt to the needs of high-volume practice.
The Clinic currently employs 1 full-time Certified Veterinary Technician as well as a full-time VA and is looking for temporary coverage in the short term, with potential for ongoing coverage ranging from intermittent relief to scheduling on a regular basis. Must be able to pass pre-employment and random background checks as well as drug testing.
Qualifications:
- High-Volume Spay/Neuter experience preferred but not required.
- Must have a minimum of 6 months of verifiable veterinary assistant/technician experience.
Required Skills/Experience:
All applicants must be able to perform the typical duties expected of an experienced assistant, including, but not limited to:
- Proper restraint of dogs and cats
- Assisting veterinarian during exams & while administering treatments
- Filling and dispensing appropriate medications
- Relaying medical instructions as instructed by the Veterinarian
- Retrieving patients and accurately relaying histories
- Cleaning surgical instruments
- Cleaning the surgery room and kennels
- Working as a team player
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to work standing or sitting for up to 10 hours daily
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the day with help
- Must be able to bend and kneel repeatedly
- Must have good hearing, including ability to distinguish changes in pitch Must have reasonable degree of agility to move through tightly cramped areas in various situations
- Must have good vision, including peripheral vision, fine detail, distance, depth perception, and ability to focus
- Prolonged exposure to various chemicals, including but not limited to, chlorhexidine, hydrogen peroxide cleaners, bleach, isoflurane gas, and isopropyl alcohol

The Clinic is operated by the City of Eugene, though this part-time position would be hired through a third-party employer and therefore candidates will not be employed by the COE directly.
Schedule:
- Likely 4 to 6-hour shifts may be up to 10-hour shifts, typically Mon – Thurs
- The daily operations of a high volume spay/neuter and wellness clinic are fast paced. Shifts vary and the clinic is currently open Monday – Thursday. Currently surgeries are performed Monday – Thursday but this may change. Candidate must be flexible with schedule changes and short notice overtime requests.
