The Role and Why It’s Important
As an Assistant Department Manager - Night Stock at Hy-Vee, you’ll help keep our store running smoothly behind the scenes. You’ll assist in leading the night stock crew, ensuring trucks are unloaded efficiently, merchandise is stocked and organized, and the store is set up for a great day ahead. Your work directly impacts product availability, store appearance, and the overall shopping experience our customers love.

What You’ll Do
No two shifts are exactly the same, but here’s what you can expect:
Set and uphold department standards for customer service, cleanliness, sanitation, team relations, and overall profitability
Supervise and direct the night stock crew, assign duties, monitor productivity, and hold individual check-ins with crew members
Oversee ordering from the warehouse including pre-orders for grocery, non-foods, and supplies, and coordinate work with assistant managers
Review and maintain the RPM system, including inventory setup, understock and backstock management, trigger settings, and order review
Unload trucks, break down pallets, sort items by aisle, and check in vendor deliveries piece by piece
Supervise drop shipments, direct store deliveries, and oversee produce and frozen food truck unloading
Write the night stock schedule and monitor time-off requests, vacation requests, overtime hours, and sick call-ins
Train new employees on stocking, facing, order tags, UPCs, register operation, customer service, and department services
Assist with customer service including checkout, sacking, carry-outs, cash accountability, and day-end reports
Set and reset new items, tags, and prices as needed, including in-store specials for prior ad items
Understand and troubleshoot store equipment including electrical systems, registers, coolers, compressors, and display cases
Maintain compliance with Hy-Vee’s dress code, hygiene standards, and all company policies
Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as needed
You’ll receive direction and support from: District Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home, and Night Stock Department Manager
Your Skills
To be successful in this role, you’ll need to be able to:
Lead and motivate a team in a fast-paced overnight retail environment
Solve practical problems and make sound decisions with a variety of variables
Use basic math skills, including fractions, decimals, and percentages
Communicate clearly in writing and verbally with employees, vendors, and leadership
Work independently, stay organized, and manage multiple priorities throughout a shift
High school diploma or equivalent required; three to five years of similar or related work experience preferred

Accountable and Reports to: District Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home, and Night Stock Department Manager
Direct Reports: Night Stock Employees
Education and Experience
Physical Requirements
Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing 100 pounds or more, with or without mechanical assistance
Continuously stand and walk on hard surfaces for extended periods
Where applicable to the role: ability to operate pallet jacks, forklifts, or similar material-handling equipment (required operator certification must be completed prior to independent use)
Work in cooler or freezer environments for extended periods
Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades to cut, trim, or grind product
Where applicable to the role, and in accordance with applicable age and legal requirements: operate a cardboard baler or compactor
Where applicable to the role: perform repetitive motions associated with dough mixing, scaling, and proofing
Ability to unload, lift, stock, and rotate incoming truck freight and merchandise
Working Environment
This is a physically active role performed primarily during overnight hours. You may encounter occasional exposure to noise, vibrations, equipment movement hazards, and cleaning chemicals or solvents, with frequent exposure to dirt. The role involves working with and around heavy store equipment including forklifts, power jacks, and compactors. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
