Position Overview
We are seeking a Landscape Designer with strong technical skills and a deep knowledge of California native plants. You will take projects from initial client consultation through design development and construction documents, working closely with our construction crews to ensure designs are built as intended. This is a hands-on role at a company where designers stay connected to the field.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Drafting
- Produce concept plans, design development drawings, and construction documents using AutoCAD and Land F/X
- Develop detailed planting plans with a strong emphasis on California native species
- Create irrigation plans, grading plans, and hardscape layouts to full construction document standards
- Prepare plant, hardscape, irrigation, and lighting schedules, details, and specifications for bidding and installation
- Maintain organized, accurate drawing sets and project files
Client Engagement
- Meet with clients to understand project goals, site conditions, and budget
- Present design concepts clearly and professionally, incorporating feedback through revisions
- Communicate design intent throughout construction to ensure quality outcomes
Native Plant Expertise
- Select California native plants suited to site conditions, climate zone, and client goals
- Demonstrate working knowledge of natives across plant communities—coastal sage scrub, chaparral, oak woodland, riparian, and grassland
- Design for low-water use, habitat value, and seasonal interest
- Stay current on native plant availability through local nurseries and growers
Project Coordination
- Coordinate with foremen and crews during installation to resolve field questions
- Assist with project scoping, material takeoffs, and vendor coordination
- Support permit applications and agency submittals as needed
- Participate in site visits during key phases of construction
What We're Looking For
- 2+ years of professional landscape design experience
- Proficiency in AutoCAD required; Land F/X experience strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of California native plants—species ID, plant communities, and ecological function
- Experience producing complete construction documents including planting, irrigation, hardscape, and lighting plans
- Degree in Landscape Architecture, Landscape Design, Horticulture, or related field preferred
- Excellent visual communication skills; hand graphics and 3D rendering a plus
- Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Valid California driver's license and ability to visit job sites
Compensation & Benefits
- $60,000 – $85,000 per year, depending on experience
