A Tree Crew Leader (or Arborist Crew Leader) is a skilled field supervisor responsible for managing a team of arborists and ground workers to safely execute tree care operations. This role combines advanced technical arboriculture—such as climbing and precision felling—with operational leadership and client relations.
- Team Leadership: Direct daily operations for a crew (typically 2–5 people), assigning tasks based on individual skill levels and monitoring performance.
- Safety Oversight: Enforce strict adherence to safety protocols (e.g., ANSI Z133 and OSHA standards), conduct pre-job hazard surveys, and ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Technical Operations: Perform and supervise complex tree care, including:
- Pruning, thinning, and removing hazardous trees.
- Advanced rigging, cabling, and bracing.
- Operating heavy machinery like bucket trucks, chippers, and stump grinders.
- Site Management: Plan daily work layouts considering weather, equipment availability, and site obstacles.
- Customer Relations: Act as the primary point of contact for clients on-site to clarify work orders, address concerns, and ensure final satisfaction.
- Mentorship: Train and mentor junior crew members in climbing techniques, equipment maintenance, and tree identification.
- Administrative Tasks: Complete daily activity reports, work orders, and equipment maintenance logs.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Experience: Typically 3+ years of professional tree climbing and arboriculture experience.
- Certifications:
- ISA Certified Arborist (often required or highly preferred).
- Valid Driver’s License; often a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required for driving heavy trucks.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 50–100 lbs, climb trees at significant heights, and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in tree biology, disease identification, and proper knot-tying and rigging methods.
Typical Work Environment Crew leaders work primarily outdoors, often in high-risk environments near electrical lines, moving traffic, or at heights up to 100 feet. Emergency storm response may require working extended or irregular hours.

Pay: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour
