Summary
This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced Marine Systems & Piping Engineer looking to join a premier commercial shipbuilder in North Kingstown, RI. This position plays a critical role in supporting the engineering, construction, installation, testing, and commissioning of marine piping systems on new vessel construction and major modification projects. Working closely with engineering, production, and shipyard leadership, you'll help deliver world-class vessels while ensuring projects remain on schedule, within budget, and fully compliant with regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Support the engineering and execution of marine piping systems throughout vessel construction.
- Develop and support piping build strategies for new construction and vessel modification projects.
- Coordinate piping system routing while ensuring proper access, clearances, and integration with structural, HVAC, and electrical systems.
- Provide technical guidance to production teams during fabrication and installation.
- Review, update, and maintain piping drawings, redlines, and as-built documentation.
- Troubleshoot field issues and resolve design or installation conflicts to minimize schedule impacts.
- Support installation, testing, flushing, commissioning, and turnover of marine piping systems.
- Coordinate with engineering, production supervisors, foremen, subcontractors, and craft personnel.
- Assist with material selection, take-offs, purchasing support, and fabrication planning.
- Ensure compliance with ABS, USCG, and industry quality standards.
- Participate in inspections, pressure testing, quality documentation, and system acceptance.
- Recommend process improvements that increase efficiency and reduce rework.
- Promote safe shipyard work practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, or a related engineering discipline (or equivalent shipyard piping experience).
- Minimum of 7 years of shipyard new construction or major vessel modification experience with an emphasis on marine piping systems.
- At least 5 years supporting piping fabrication, construction, or craft management.
- Strong understanding of marine piping systems, including:
- Fuel systems
- Ballast systems
- Hydraulic systems
- Cooling water systems
- Bilge systems
- Auxiliary piping systems
- Experience interpreting marine engineering drawings and specifications.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD.
- Experience with ShipConstructor or similar marine design software preferred.
- Working knowledge of ABS and U.S. Coast Guard regulations.
- Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced shipyard environment.
Preferred Experience
- Commercial shipbuilding or major vessel repair experience.
- Experience coordinating multiple shipyard trades.
- Knowledge of marine fabrication methods and installation sequencing.
- Experience supporting commissioning and vessel delivery.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in an active industrial shipyard environment.
- Ability to climb ladders, board vessels, and access confined spaces when necessary.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ability to distinguish safety colors and meet physical requirements for shipyard work.
