A Substitute School Nurse steps in during absences of the regular nurse. Depending on the duration of the assignment, the substitute may be expected to perform the full range of school nursing duties, including immediate health care, record-keeping, screenings, medication administration.

Assist sick or injured students and staff: perform first aid, manage minor illnesses, coordinate with parents for student pickup.

Administer medications and treatments per physician’s orders and parental permission; maintain accurate documentation.

Handle emergency procedures and exposures (e.g., bloodborne pathogens) according to district policies.

Maintain and supervise the school health clinic—ensure stock and cleanliness of supplies, secure medications.

Adhere to confidentiality standards and relevant laws (IDEA, HIPAA, school board policies).
Valid Virginia license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) required.
