Position Summary
Kids Academy of Learning & Excellence (KALE) is seeking a dependable, safety-focused Before & After School Transportation Specialist to provide transportation services for children enrolled in our Before and After School Program.
This is a 1099 Independent Contractor opportunity for an individual who owns and operates their own passenger vehicle and maintains appropriate insurance coverage. The Transportation Specialist will safely transport students between approved school locations and KALE while providing a professional, reliable, and positive experience for children and families.
The ideal candidate is responsible, punctual, safety-oriented, and enjoys working with children. This position provides an opportunity to support families in the community by helping students arrive safely and on time each day.
Responsibilities
- Safely transport children between KALE and designated schools on assigned routes.
- Operate a personal passenger van or approved transportation vehicle in accordance with all Virginia traffic laws and safety requirements.
- Follow assigned morning and afternoon transportation schedules.
- Ensure children are safely seated and secured before operating the vehicle.
- Assist children with boarding and exiting the vehicle.
- Maintain accurate transportation attendance records and student accountability logs.
- Use GPS navigation systems to plan efficient routes and adjust for traffic, weather, or road conditions.
- Communicate professionally with parents, school personnel, and KALE leadership regarding schedules, delays, or route changes.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming transportation environment.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle safety inspections.
- Report vehicle maintenance concerns, accidents, incidents, or safety issues immediately.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and school information.
- Support additional transportation needs, including field trips, summer programs, enrichment activities, and special events as needed.
Independent Contractor Requirements
As a 1099 Independent Contractor, the Transportation Specialist is responsible for providing and maintaining:
- Reliable passenger vehicle
- Commercial automobile insurance
- Fuel expenses
- Vehicle maintenance and repairs
- Vehicle registration and inspections
- Business-related expenses
- Required taxes and filings
The contractor must provide professional transportation services while meeting KALE’s safety, reliability, and quality standards.
Vehicle Requirements
Contractor-provided vehicles must:
- Be capable of safely transporting children
- Meet all applicable Virginia vehicle safety requirements
- Have current registration and inspection
- Maintain valid insurance coverage
- Have working heating and air conditioning
- Have functioning seat belts for every passenger
- Be clean, safe, and well-maintained
- Include:
- First aid kit
- Fire extinguisher
- Emergency safety equipment
- GPS navigation capability
- Reliable communication capability
Insurance Requirements
Contractors must maintain:
- Commercial Automobile Liability Insurance
- Proof of current insurance coverage before beginning transportation services
Contractors are responsible for all insurance premiums, fuel costs, maintenance expenses, repairs, and vehicle operating costs.
Childcare Background Screening Requirements
Because this position involves direct contact with children, all Transportation Specialists must successfully complete required childcare safety screenings before transporting KALE students.
Requirements include:
- Childcare background check clearance
- Criminal history screening
- Child Protective Services (CPS) background check
- Fingerprint-based background screening (if required)
- Sex offender registry check
- DMV driving record review
Contractors must maintain eligibility to work around children throughout the duration of the contractor agreement.
Qualifications
- Minimum age of 25 years old.
- Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
- Clean driving record.
- Minimum three years of safe driving experience preferred.
- Previous experience as a passenger driver, shuttle driver, school transportation provider, chauffeur, medical transportation driver, delivery driver, or similar role preferred.
- Experience working with children strongly preferred.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Dependable, punctual, professional, and safety-focused.
- Ability to follow schedules and transportation procedures consistently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous childcare transportation experience.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
- Child Passenger Safety training.
- Experience operating passenger vans.
- Knowledge of Chesterfield County schools and surrounding areas.
Compensation
1099 Independent Contractor Compensation
Compensation is based on route assignments, experience, vehicle qualifications, and transportation needs.
