NWAP focuses on multimodal anesthesia and analgesia with peripheral and neuraxial nerve blocks as a critical part of this regimen. Benefits of this include less narcotic use, less post operative nausea, and less PACU time. Our workflow at NWAP involved performing blocks primarily in the Preoperative area. This further allows for increases OR flow and efficiency.
While the Preoperative nurses at facilities do assist with nerve blocks, we do utilize Block Nurses to assist and train the preoperative nursing staff.
The Block Nurse primary role serves to assist the Anesthesiologist in duties related to performing nerve blocks. These duties occur primarily in the preoperative area, but may also be performed in the OR, PACU, L&D, Floor, or ICU.
Responsibilities include:
· Ensure that informed consent for the nerve block has been obtained
· Active participant in the time out for the nerve block
· Prepare/assist with preparation of nerve block equipment and medications
· Assist with monitoring patients after nerve block performed
· Assist with providing post nerve block instructions
· Assist with nerve block procedure in-service and education of preoperative nursing staff
· Assist anesthesiologist with pain rounds and post nerve block follow-up phone calls
Pay: $49.00 - $52.00 per hour
