Job description: The Church Sexton is a vital part of the mission of Zion Episcopal Church, ensuring that our facilities are well-maintained and ready for the many groups and ministries that use our facilities. This part-time position (approximately 15-20 hours/week, depending on seasonal needs) is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks to ensure that the Church environment remains safe and sanitary. This position requires a responsible and self-directed individual who can work with little supervision.
Key Responsibilities:
- Clean and sanitize church, restrooms, parish hall, and other areas as needed, including, but not limited to: Empty trash and recycling bins, and dispose of waste in a proper and safe manner; Clean and sanitize bathrooms and refill supplies; Vacuum, sweep and mop floors and polish wood surfaces.
- Ensure proper functioning of plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems by performing regular maintenance tasks (e.g. replacing lightbulbs and filters), and contacting repair professionals as needed.
- Set up and break down for special events, meetings, and Church functions as needed.
- Develop cleaning and regular maintenance schedules
- Keep sidewalks clear - leaf and snow removal when necessary.
- Mow grassy areas around Church property.
- Report any issues such as maintenance or safety concerns to Priest-in-Charge.
- Maintain building security by routinely walking throughout the facility and locking doors and windows as needed.
- Maintain cleaning and maintenance supplies and notify Secretary or Treasurer of needed supplies and equipment for re-ordering.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Strong work ethic with a focus on attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to interact respectfully with parishioners, volunteers, staff, and visitors.
- Ability to work independently and follow instructions with minimal supervision.
- Reliable and punctual, with a positive attitude toward work.
- Physically capable of performing custodial duties, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
- Previous custodial or janitorial experience is preferred but not required.
- Skill in performing building cleaning tasks & ordinary maintenance.
- Must pass a background check and meet any other required diocesan safety protocols.
Compensation:
- Pay commensurate with experience, $16.00-$19.00 per hour
- Paid Federal Holidays are included
- Sick time to be allowed in accordance with New York State Law.
