Direct supervisor of others and team leader
- Functions as a role model by periodically demonstrating the ability to provide direct patient care with consideration of age and population specific needs.
- Assists the Director with assuring high quality patient care. Monitors staff performance and provides instruction
- Oversees patient care delivery in a secure and therapeutic environment
- Coordinates admissions, transfers, discharges, and collaboration with inpatient and outpatient services
- Coordinates schedules of staff members to ensure adequate coverage and provides maximum utilization of manpower based on patient acuity and staffing guidelines while accounting for staff skill mix.
- Monitors staff customer service performance and notifies the director of positives as well as concerns.
- Communicates policies and procedures and monitors performance of staff
- Assessing individual patient needs from admission to discharge.
- Involve the patient / family in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care.
- Demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development throughout the lifespan.
- Provides appropriate age care.
- Recognize and report changes in patient status.
- Assess the patient for signs of labor.
- Triage patient based on EMTALA guidelines.
- Assess the patient for risk of hemorrhage, VTE, hypertensive crisis and other life-threatening illnesses.
- Assessment of fetus intrauterine activity.
- Assessment of the bonding between the newborn and their mother.
- Assess feeding choices and educate based on feeding choices.
- Assessment of the bonding of the newborn and their mother.
- Maintain couple care — keeping mother and baby together.
- Consistent documentation of fetal heart rate and uterine activity of the patient.
- Prepare the patient and the room for delivery, vaginal or caesarean.
- Assess breastfeeding needs.
Operational Management
- Participates with the Director in recruitment, staff selection, training, mentoring, retention, counseling, and performance evaluations.
- Monitors availability of supplies and plans for replacement of necessary items and purchase of new items to assure efficient operations.
- Works with the Director to ensure compliance with regulatory and accrediting agency specifications to meet federal, state and local regulations, including Conditions of Participation, DHR, HIPAA, EMTALA, etc.
- Understands operating budget for a unit and participates in expense management
- Meets or exceeds unit-related goals identified on the hospital quality scorecard.
- Understands unit-based Performance Improvement Plan: Measures and Reports Outcomes and Improvement Strategies using PDCA Methodology and tracks unit performance
Communication/Customer Experience
- Rounds on staff, patients, physicians and departments served to identify opportunities for recognition and improvement and to identify needed tools/equipment.
- Provides service recovery for customers
- Maintains open communication with all staff members through staff meetings, email correspondence and other communication methods
- Keeps Director and Administration informed of department activities and significant events
- Promotes safe hand-off communication amongst team members (i.e. bedside rounding, use of hand-off report)
- Demonstrates excellent customer service and conducts duties in a positive, customer-friendly manner to all customers of the department (patients, visitors, physicians, other team members)
- Maintains awareness of patient experience scores and targets areas of needed improvement by using established strategies and by incorporating bedside staff involvement
Education/Development/Personal Initiative
- Insures all new employees have been oriented to units as well as units they may be floated to work in
- Knowledgeable about and follows hospital/unit policies and procedures and communicates effectively to staff
- Participates in department in-service programs; partners with the Unit Director to understand staff knowledge gaps and participates in annual competency requirements.
- Assumes responsibility for personal professional development
- Provides notification of tardiness/attendance and follows attendance guidelines
- Plans for succession by developing and educating others
Diagnosis
- Develop a nursing diagnosis based on assessment and physician diagnosis.
- Recognize symptoms of labor, hemorrhage, uterine abruption.
Planning
- Plans individualized care of the patient based on nursing diagnosis and medical diagnosis.
- Plans for the management of the infant at delivery, coordinating the care with ancillary departments and physicians if needed.
- Identifies the needs of the patient and infant, including physical, emotional, cultural and spiritual.
Implementation
- Implementation of an interdisciplinary plan of care.
- Documentation is ongoing patient care to reflect the nursing process.
- Consistent documentation of fetal heart rate and uterine activity of the patient.
- Prepare the patient and the room for delivery, vaginal or caesarean.
- Preforms high quality care based on hospital and department quality measures.
- Assist with breastfeeding.
Evaluation
- Evaluate patient care, documents goals and revise the plan of care according to the patient’s response to interventions.
- Reviews diagnostic studies, prenatal records and other outpatient records.
- Reports and documents abnormal and critical findings according to policy.
Education Requirement:
- Associates Degree
- Bachelors Degree (preferred)
- Master’s Degree (preferred)
​​​​​​​License, Certification, Ect:
- Active GA RN license
- NRP (may obtain up to 6 months after hire)
- BLS
- ACLS (may obtain up to 6 months after hire)
​​​​​​​Experience:
Minimum
- Must have L & D experience
- 2 year experience that includes triaging the patient
