ABOUT THE ROLE
Total Tech is a small, established Western North Carolina company handling residential and light commercial technology work: networking, audio/video, Starlink, structured wiring, and smart home systems.
This is a hands-on field position. You will be at a different customer's home or business most days, working independently once you are up to speed, solving problems that rarely look the same twice. It is a good fit for someone who likes variety and takes pride in work that is done properly and looks clean when it is finished.
We serve Hendersonville, Asheville Brevard, Waynesville, Highlands, Cashiers, and Lake Toxaway, and beyond.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
- Starlink installations – site surveys, roof and pole mounts, cable routing, sealed penetrations, and integration with the customer's existing network
- Home and small business networking – routers, mesh systems, access points, wired backhaul, and diagnosing dead zones and dropouts
- Structured wiring – CAT-6 drops in new construction and finished homes, patch panels, terminations, and cleaning up wiring closets
- TV mounting and audio – displays up to 85 inches on drywall and stone, in-ceiling speakers, soundbars, and receivers
- Smart home systems – Lutron lighting, smart thermostats, and voice control setup
- Computer and technical support – new system setup, data migration, network printers, and remote support
- Light commercial work – office networks and conference rooms
THE WORKING CONDITIONS
We want to be upfront about this part, because it is a real component of the job rather than an occasional exception.
Installations regularly take you onto roofs, up extension ladders, into attics, and through crawlspaces. Some of our best customers are 60 to 90 minutes out in the mountains, which means real drive time and occasional weather. Cable pulls happen in tight, warm, dusty places.
Technicians who enjoy this work tend to be the ones who like being out of an office and do not mind the physical side of it.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
You do not need to know everything. We will train you on the systems you have not touched. What we cannot train from zero is the underlying foundation, so we are looking for someone who has already worked with some of this.
You should be comfortable answering these without looking them up:
- The difference between a router and a switch
- The wiring order for a CAT-6 termination
- What a default gateway is
- Why WiFi drops off in a back bedroom, and a few things you would check first
You should have hands-on experience with several of these:
- Terminating ethernet: keystones, patch panels, or ends
- Pulling cable through walls, attics, or crawlspaces
- Setting up routers or mesh systems
- Mounting televisions into studs or masonry
- Working with a stud finder, impact driver, fish tape, and a toner and probe
Especially valuable: Lutron training or certification, CompTIA A+ or Network+, satellite or ISP installation experience, or a background in electrical, or cable work.
WHAT SETS OUR TECHNICIANS APART
Our reputation is built less on technical wizardry than on how we treat people. Customers consistently tell us they hired us again because we responded quickly, arrived when we said we would, resolved the issue on the first visit, explained things in plain language, and left the house clean.
That standard is central to the role. We are looking for someone who:
- Calls ahead when running behind, rather than explaining on arrival
- Can walk a non-technical homeowner through a problem clearly and respectfully
- Dresses and labels cabling, knowing someone will open that panel years from now
- Cleans up thoroughly: packaging out, drop cloths down, dust vacuumed
- Is comfortable saying "let me find out" and then following through
- Raises a mistake right away rather than hoping it goes unnoticed
REQUIREMENTS
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- Comfortable working from ladders and on roofs, including steep and two-story
- Able to work in attics, crawlspaces, and other tight or dusty spaces
- Able to lift and carry 50 lbs repeatedly, including up stairs
- Willing to travel up to 90 minutes to job sites
- Professional and presentable in customers' homes
- Background check
WHAT WE OFFER
- $22 to $35 per hour based on demonstrated ability. We pay for capability, not years on a resume.
- Paid training on systems and platforms you have not worked with yet
- Genuine variety. The schedule changes constantly.
- A small team where your work is visible and your judgment matters
- A path toward running jobs independently and into higher-value certified work
