Help make housing happen.
Housing doesn't happen by accident.
Behind every repaired home, every family moving toward homeownership, every counseling appointment, and every house being rebuilt is a tremendous amount of information, coordination, documentation, and follow-through.
That's where you come in.
Housing Assistance Corporation is looking for a Housing Program Specialist to help keep our housing programs organized, connected, and moving forward.
This is a unique role for someone who likes to put the pieces together.
You will spend part of your day organizing eligibility documentation for a household, reviewing property information, updating a program tracking spreadsheet, helping with an environmental review, preparing an assignment of benefits, making sure a file is complete, or coordinating the paperwork needed to move a reconstruction project forward.
In addition, you will work with our Disaster Recovery team one day and help our Home Repair, Housing Counseling, or New Construction teams the next.
You won't be sitting behind a desk doing the same thing every day.
You'll be helping a growing housing nonprofit build the systems and infrastructure that allow our programs—and the people we serve—to succeed.
About Housing Assistance
Housing Assistance Corporation is a nonprofit organization working to create and preserve safe, affordable housing throughout Western North Carolina.
Our work includes:
- Home Repair
- Homeownership and New Construction
- Housing Counseling
- Disaster Recovery
- Multifamily Housing
- Community-based housing initiatives
Our organization has deep roots in the region, and our work continues to evolve as the housing needs of our communities change.
In the wake of Hurricane Helene, HAC has expanded its long-term recovery work. That has created an important opportunity to strengthen the administrative and program infrastructure that supports all of our housing work—not just disaster recovery.
That's why we're looking for someone who can work across programs, learn quickly, and bring organization and follow-through to complicated housing processes.
What You'll Do
Keep housing programs moving.
You'll help program staff manage the many details that have to come together before a housing project or household can move forward.
Your work may include:
- Collecting and organizing homeownership, income, insurance, eligibility, and property documentation.
- Maintaining accurate physical and electronic files.
- Supporting environmental reviews.
- Gathering GIS, parcel, property, and other housing-related data.
- Managing spreadsheets, databases, and program tracking systems.
- Reviewing files for completeness and identifying what's missing.
- Helping triage cases and determine next steps.
- Preparing and tracking assignments of benefits and other required documents.
- Coordinating reconstruction documents, meetings, inspections, and other project activities.
- Supporting our Disaster Case Manager with the administrative side of housing recovery cases.
- Providing administrative and technical support to Home Repair, Housing Counseling, New Construction, and other HAC programs.
- Helping improve the systems, tools, and processes we use to manage our work.
This role may be a great fit if...
You are the person who:
Likes making order out of complexity.
You don't mind having 15 things going on at once—as long as you can figure out what needs to happen next.
Notices the missing piece.
You see that a form is missing a signature, a file is missing a document, or a spreadsheet doesn't quite add up.
Likes solving problems.
You don't necessarily need to know the answer immediately. You're comfortable figuring out who knows, finding the information, and getting the problem solved.
Can zoom out and zoom in.
You can understand the bigger housing program while still caring about whether the right document is in the right file.
Are comfortable with details.
Spreadsheets, databases, property records, forms, documentation, and tracking systems don't scare you.
Want your work to matter.
You may spend much of your day working with documents and data—but you understand that those documents ultimately represent someone's home, stability, and future.
What You Bring
We're looking for someone who is:
- Highly organized and detail-oriented.
- Comfortable managing multiple priorities.
- A strong communicator and reliable follow-through person.
- Comfortable working with spreadsheets, databases, and electronic files.
- Curious and willing to learn complicated programs and requirements.
- Able to work independently while being a strong team member.
- Thoughtful with confidential and sensitive information.
- A problem-solver who looks for solutions rather than waiting for someone else to fix things.
- Motivated by HAC's mission and the importance of safe, affordable housing.
Experience in housing, home repair, construction, disaster recovery, social services, nonprofit programs, grant administration, or program compliance is helpful—but we're more interested in your ability to learn, organize, solve problems, and get things done.
